O presente estudo exploratório procurou compreender a relação entre o uso problemático da internet, sintomas psicopatológicos e autoestima; e o possível efeito moderador da autoestima na relação entre o uso problemático da internet e sintomas psicopatológicos. Participaram 382 sujeitos, com idades compreendidas entre os 18 e os 25 anos. Aplicaram-se os instrumentos EUGPI2, BSI e RSES para recolha dos dados. Os principais resultados indicaram a existência de uma correlação negativa entre a autoestima e o uso problemático da internet, assim como entre a autoestima e a presença de sintomatologia psicopatológica. A correlação entre uso problemático da internet e sintomas psicopatológicos revelou-se positiva. Verificou-se um efeito moderador significativo da autoestima na relação entre o uso problemático da internet e a presença de sintomatologia psicopatológica, quando se está perante níveis baixos ou moderados de autoestima; Relationship between Problematic internet use, psychopathological symptoms and self-esteem in young adults
Abstract:
The present exploratory study aimed to understand the relationship between problematic internet use, psychopathological symptoms and self-esteem; and the possible moderating effect of self-esteem on the relationship between problematic internet use and psychopathological symptoms. Participated a final sample of 382 subjects, aged between 18 and 25. The instruments EUGIP2, BSI and RSES were applied. The main results showed a negative correlation between self-esteem and problematic internet use, as well as a negative correlation between self-esteem and psychopathological symptoms. The correlation between problematic internet use and psychopathological symptoms was shown to be positive. A significant moderation effect of self-esteem on the relationship between problematic internet use and psychopathological symptoms was found, in low or moderate levels of self-esteem
