Application of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) for identify mass movements in the Oro river and quebrada Grande in Piedecuesta, department of Santander

ConclusionesThis thesis work in article format has the purpose of generating a methodological guide
for the zoning of threats by torrential floods using as a result the interpretation of the
NDVI index in Sentinel-2A satellite images. This project works the lower basin of
Quebrada Grande and part of the middle basin of the Río de Oro in the municipality of
Piedecuesta in the department of Santander, where on the night of February 25 - 2020
and the early morning of February 26 - 2020 by reasons of high rainfall triggered mass
movements causing material damage and affecting the nearby community. The most
affected areas are the result of flow-type events in the lower part of the Quebrada
Grande basin followed by a greater landslide in areas near its mouth to the Oro River,
where through the NDVI raster these areas can be visualized with more clarity. These
mass movements are detected by the NDVI indices because they generalize the
surface and allow to distinguish and differentiate the bare terrain from the vegetation
cover. Two sentinel-2A satellite images were used: one prior to the event and another
followed by the event in order to make the comparison through the NDVI indices and
determine a differential between them in order to establish the areas detonated by this
torrential avenue.Especializació
