Los estudios fueron realizados en su mayoría por alumnos de máster y doctorado y por profesores universitarios que, como los autores de este volumen de Ágora de Educación Física y Deporte, dirigen y llevan a cabo programas para jóvenes basados en valores. De su trabajo con niños y jóvenes de todo tipo emergieron numerosas preguntas que se convirtieron en el punto central de sus líneas de investigación y de su labor académica. Utilizando una gran variedad de fuentes de información (e.g., entrevistas, diarios, observaciones sistemáticas, cuestiona-rios), la mayoría de los estudios se han alineado con los métodos más tradicionales de investigación (modelos teóricos, experimentales, narrativo/cuali-tativos). El número anterior de Ágora presentó los perfiles de distintos programas para jóvenes basados en el modelo TPSR. Aunque el punto central que comparten dichos programas son los valores del TPSR (i.e., auto-control y respeto de los derechos y sentimientos de los demás, There have been over two decades of research on various facets of Don Hellison's Teaching Personal and Social Responsibility (TPSR) model. Many of the studies were conducted by graduate students and university faculty who, like the authors of this Agora for Physical Education and Sport issue, direct and teach in values-based youth programs. Their work with all kinds of children and youth has generated numerous research questions. For many, these questions not only became the focal points of their own research but their academic course work as well. Relying on a variety of data sources (e.g., questionnaires, systematic observation, interviews, journals) most of the studies have aligned with more traditional methods of inquiry (theory-driven, experimental, narrative/qualita-tive models).  The previous issue of Agora for Physical Education and Sport provided several profiles of various youth programs that utilized the TPSR model. A pesar de su singularidad, la eficacia del TPSR ha sido a menudo cuestionada. Con frecuencia se pregun-ta: “¿qué cambios produce el TPSR en las vidas de los chicos?” Una pregunta razonable que reclama más investiga-ción sistemática de su eficacia y fidelidad. Indagar estos asuntos es cada vez más importante dado que el modelo se difunde por el mundo. Así, por ejemplo, los artículos de este volumen versan sobre programas aplicados en Estados Unidos, Corea, Nueva Zelanda, España y Canadá que han requerido distintos grados de adaptación cultural o lingüística del modelo TPSR. Los evaluadores de los programas que colaboran en este número han intenta-do responder a distintas preguntas. Al hacerlo, han tenido que afrontar conceptos tales como crecimiento del programa, valor, fidelidad, mérito, impacto formativo y sumativo e, incluso, costes. A menudo dichos conceptos se cruzan con los objetivos y metas de cualquier intento de evaluación. Para poder defender una evaluación, debe aclararse el significado de dichos conceptos a los otros investigadores y, sobre todo, a los participantes. Es decir, los evaluadores tienen que traducir dichos conceptos dentro de un marco coherente que guíe todos los aspectos del desarrollo de los jóvenes a través del trabajo de actividad físico-deportiva. En consecuencia, los lectores deben extraer dos cosas de los estudios aquí recogidos. Regardless of their uniqueness, however, the efficacy of TPSR programs has been often questioned. Frequently asked is: "Does the TPSR program make a difference in kids’ lives?" The question is a fair one and calls for further systematic inquiry into program efficacy and fidelity. Exploration of these topics is increasingly important as the model is disseminated around the world. For instance, the articles in the current issue focus on programs that required varying degrees of cultural and/or linguistic translation of the TPSR model as it has been applied in the United States, New Zealand, Spain, Canada, and Korea. The program evaluators who contributed the articles for this special Agora for Physical Education and Sport issue have attempted to answer a range of questions. In doing so they also had to come to grips with a number of concepts such as program growth, value, fidelity, merit, formative and summative impact, and even costs. Quite often these concepts intersect with the purposes and goals of any evaluation effort. In order to make any evaluation defensible, these concepts must be clarified in their meaning to other researchers and most importantly, practitioners. That is, evaluators need to translate these concepts into some coherent framework that guides all aspects of youth development through sport and physical activity work. Consequently, the readers need to take away two things from the studies contained in this issue. La otra es una visión más amplia de los enfoques que pueden usarse al evaluar programas TPSR. Esperamos que el conocimiento de distinto tipo de estudios, de su diseño y resultados, proporcione una imagen más clara de la amplitud y carácter del programa y sus productos; que éstos, a su vez, delimiten puntos de referencia para futuras investigaciones y, también, ayudan a los lectores a planificar futuros programas TPSR o a modificar los actuales. En resumen, pocos defenderían que la evaluación no es una parte esencial de cualquier programa de desarrollo juvenil. Sin evaluar los procesos y resultados de un programa, es imposible afirmar si hay mejoría o impacto. Sabemos que los programas deben someterse a escrutinio continuo para asegurarnos que las ideas funcionan o que los objetivos se cum-plen. Por tanto, se recuerda al lector que la evaluación debe extenderse más allá de los ejemplos descritos en este número. De hecho, la evaluación debe hacerse de muchas maneras. Debe llevarse a cabo cada vez que uno se embarca con chicos en experiencias de aprendi-zaje que espera repercutan en sus vidas; ocurre cuando, “sobre el terreno”, reconocemos esos cambios que hay que hacer; ocurre también cuando nos damos cuenta de esos incidentes críticos que de repente se convierten en “momentos de enseñanza cruciales”; y ocurre también cuando esas “pequeñas victorias” en el trabajo con jóvenes son reconocidas y celebradas. En última instancia, los autores esperan que sus textos en Ágora animen a otros a adoptar una perspectiva más amplia y crítica de su trabajo con los chicos. implementation. Second, is a widened view of the array of approaches that can be used in assessing TPSR programming. Knowing the types of studies, their designs, and outcomes will hopefully provide a clearer picture of the scope and character of the program and its products. In turn, these products provide important reference points for future research efforts. They should also help inform readers about planning future or modifying present TPSR programs. In sum, few would argue that evaluation is not an essential part of any youth development program. Without assessment of a program’s processes and outcomes, improvement and impact cannot be tenable. We also know that programs need to undergo continuous scrutiny to be sure that ideas are working or that certain goals are being met. Therefore, the reader is reminded that evaluation must extend beyond the written examples found in this journal issue. Indeed, evaluation needs to happen in many ways. It must occur every time one engages kids in learning experiences that intend to make some difference in their lives. It occurs when recognizing those “on the spot" changes that need to be made. It also happens when catching those critical incidences that suddenly become all-important “teachable moments.” And, it occurs when those “little victories” in youth work are acknowledged and celebrated.  In the end, the authors are hopeful that the contributions in this issue will encourage others to look both broadly and critically at all aspects of what they do with kids.
