July 4-8, 2017217introductionIntergenerational programming is mutuallybeneficial for participating generation groups.Children and older adults involved in inter-generational activities demonstrate impro-ved attitudes toward, and interaction withthe opposite age group (Belgrave, 2011;Isaki & Harmon, 2015). Older adults also de-monstrate increased physical activity/func-tion, intellectual ability, and improvementsin areas related to quality of life (Sakurai etal., 2016). Despite these documented bene-fits, there is a large gap in intergenerationalresearch due to a limited number of studiesthat examine effects across multiple domainareas, and even fewer that are music-based.Therefore, the purpose of this study is toidentify the effects of an intergenerationalmusic therapy program on children’s lite-racy, older adults’ physical functioning andself-worth, and interactions between thetwo age groups. methodParticipants of this study are three-year-oldchildren from a university-based child caresetting and older adults from a senior livingfacility, some of whom have cognitive impair-ments such as Alzheimer’s disease, dementia,and Parkinson’s disease. The experimentalgroup will participate in 30-minute, semi-we-ekly music therapy sessions following a con-sistent format:1. A gathering activity (10 minutes) using anoriginal transition song to orient the par-ticipants,2. A signature greeting song (3 minutes) topromote intergenerational interaction, 3. Non-locomotor and locomotor movement(5 minutes) to improve adults’ physicalfunctioning,4. Instrument Play (5 minutes) to promoteintergenerational interaction,5.
