Areas: Coastal waters from False Cape to Crescent City. 
Objectives: 1.  To determine the relative abundance of legal and sublegal 
market crabs~ Cancer magister, for mortality studies. 
2.  To test the efficiency of night versus day trawling in cap-
turing male and female crabs of all sizes, and the relative 
efficiency of capturing crabs 140 mm shoulder width and larger 
with traps versus trawls. 
Gear: 1. Trawls were made with a 41 foot head rope flat otter trawl 
with 3/4 inch mesh~ 5/16 inch foot chain, and a 5/16 inch 
tickler chain. 
2.  Trapping was carried out with 40 inch diameter pots with se-
cured escape ports. 
Operations: Trawling was conducted in two sampling areas. a) From False Cape 
to Trinidad in depths from 8 to 50 fathoms, roughly 170 square 
, 
l. 
miles in area, and b) from PatrickYs Point to 5 miles south of 
Crescent City in depths from 8 to 50 fathoms, roughly 250 square 
miles in area (Fig. 1). Twenty day and 20 night trawls were made 
in each sampling area. 
Trap stations were randomly chosen in areas from False Cape to 
Crescent City in depths from 8 to 30 fathoms (Fig. 2). Inclement 
weather allowed us to complete only 21 of the 42 trap stations. 
The crabs captured by trawling and trapping were measured and ex-
amined for condition. 
Results:  The 80 trawls yielded a total of 44,844 crabs, of which 42,701 
were of the 1968 year class. The remainder of .the trawl catch 
consisted of 498 legal crabs and 1~645 sublegals. 
The 40 night trawls yielded 40~544 crabs compared to 4,300 for 
the 40 day trawls. 
Eight traps were set at each of 21 stations. The number of legal 
crabs (159 rom or greater) per trap per station ranged from 2.0 to 
30.5 with a average of 15.5 (Figures 2 and 3). The number of sub-
legals per trap per station ranged from 2 0 3 to 32 0 4 with an aver-
age of 10.8.
