Purpose : To prepare  app ropr i a t e  s e c t i o n s  of t h e  Marine Resources 
Atlas. 
Operations: A survey of k e l p  beds, s e a  l i o n  hau l ing  o u t ,  b i r d  
rooke r i e s ,  p e l a g i c  b i r d s  and f i s h i n g  a c t i v i t i e s  w a s  
conducted about t h e  two i s l a n d s .  
Resu l t s  : Surface  observa t ion  of ke lp  beds tends  t o  under esti- 
mate t h e  s i z e  of beds a s  compared w i t h  a e r i a l  surveys  
which, on t h e  o t h e r  hand, may over e s t i m a t e  a r e a s .  
The survey found s e v e r a l  brown p e l i c a n  r o o k e r i e s  on 
9an Nicolas  I s l and .  One rookery c o n s i s t e d  of 500 b i r d s .

No abalone o r  l o b s t e r  f i s h i n g  was observed because of 
t h e  August c l o s u r e  f o r  abalone and t h e  summer c l o s u r e  
f o r  l o b s t e r .  Severa l  plank boa t s  and t r o l l e r s  were anchored 
o f f  t h e  west end of San Nicolas  I s l and  t h e  n i g h t  of 
August 31. Five  inch s h e l l  ca s ings  were f l o a t i n g  i n  
t h e  channel  between Santa Barbara I s l a n d  and t h e  w e s t  
end of Santa  Ca ta l ina  I s l and  (an unexplo i ted  r e sou rce  
f o r  s c r a p  b r a s s ) .
