BIG GAME FISH INVESTIGATIONS

Vessel:  R/V KELP BASS 
Dates : October 16-19, 1973 
Loca l i t y :  In shore  wa te r s  from P o i n t  Dume t o  Gaviota 
Purpose : 1. To t a g  and r e l e a s e  P a c i f i c  bon i to  (Sarda chCliensis) 
and C a l i f o r n i a  barracuda (Sphyraena arqentea). 
2.  To c o l l e c t  eye l e n s e s  from P a c i f i c  b o n i t o  f o r  
popula t ion  s t u d i e s .  
3.  To t a g  and r e l e a s e  any P a c i f i c  mackerel (Scornber 
japonicus) and jack  mackerel (Trachumts syrrunetricus) 
taken i n c i d e n t a l l y .  
4. To make i n c i d e n t a l  c o l l e c t i o n s  a s  reques ted  by o t h e r  
i n v e s t i g a t i o n s .  
Procedure: T r o l l i n g  wi th  j i g s  was conducted dur ing  d a y l i g h t  hours  
i n  o rde r  t o  c a p t u r e  f i s h  f o r  tagging .  S t i l l  f i s h i n g  
w i t h  b a i t  was done under l i g h t s  a t  n i g h t .  
Resu l t s  : Due t o  dense fog ,  f i s h i n g  t ime was r e s t r i c t e d  t o  a  day and 
a h a l f .  F i sh ing  e f f o r t  was concent ra ted  from Po in t  Dume 
t o  Gaviota w i t h  most e f f o r t  occu r r ing  o f f s h o r e  of Santa  
Barbara.  A t o t a l  of 16  bon i to ,  ranging i n  s i z e  from 5 1  t o  
66 cm, was tagged and r e l eased .  These f i s h  were i n  t h e  I 
and I1 age groups. A l l  bon i to  w e r e  caught on t r o l l e d  j i g s  
dur ing  day l igh t  hours.  Sea s u r f a c e  water  tempera tures  ranged 
from 60 t o  62.5'~. No P a c i f i c  mackerel ,  j a ck  mackerel,  o r  
barracuda were tagged.
