Dates :  March 11 - March 17,  1972 
L o c a l i t y :  I n s h o r e  w a t e r s  n e a r  t h e  c i t i e s  of S e a s i d e ,  Monterey and 
P a c i f i c  Grove. 
Purpose:  To conduct  c o n t r a c t  s t u d i e s  f o r  t h e  S t a t e  Water Q u a l i t y  
C o n t r o l  Board. 
R e s u l t s :  B i o l o g i s t - d i v e r s  occupied s t a t i o n s  a t  t h e  Monterey and 
S e a s i d e  sewage o u t f a l l s .  Inclement  weather  p r e c l u d e d  
o p e r a t i o n s  n e a r  P a c i f i c  Grove. 
A t o t a l  of 27 s t a t i o n s  was occup ied ,  t h i r t e e n  a t  t h e  
Mcnterey o u t f a l l  and f o u r t e e n  a t  the  S e a s i d e  o u t f a l l - .  
I n  a d d i t i o n ,  f o u r  t r a w l s  were  made a t  t h e  S e a s i d e  o u t f a l l .  
Both o u t f a l l s  a r e  c h a r a c t e r i z e d  by a s u r f a c e  f i e l d ,  making 
them easy  t o  l o c a t e .  A moderate k e l p  s t a n d  was p r e s e n t  
w i t h i n  500 f e e t  of t h e  Monterey o u t f a l l ,  where a p p r o p r i a t e  
s u b s t r a t e  was p r e s e n t .  
Material c o l l e c t e d  was p r e s e r v e d  and r e t u r n e d  t o  t h e  
l a b o r a t o r y  f o r  a n a l y s i s .
