Gender and the Field of Musicology

Abstract

The rise of studies in music and gender numbers among the most recent and significant developments in the field of musicology. Gender has come into its own as an analytical category in music only in the last ten years or so, and even though issues that would now fall under the topic of gender were discussed early in the 1980s, especially in work on women, the conscious and deliberate use of the term itself is even more recent. In its relatively brief existence, however, gender has had a profound impact on the field
