The theory behind th i s program is that good management w i l l enhance the M e d i c a l Campus's m o s t i m p o r t a n t asset—its h u m a n resources. Th i s year's program caters to 10 managers, repre-senting 10 departments at the M e d i c a l Campus. The program focuses on develop-ing management ski l l s of managers and supervisors of a l l levels. T h i s year, many of the managers part ic ipat-i n g are re la t ive ly new to the i r posit ions of respon-s ib i l i ty . The program, called "Managing for Product iv i ty , " was developed by Bos-t o n Univers i ty Professor of Management George H . Labovitz, Ph.D. , and is con-ducted under the auspices of his private company. Or-ganizational Dynamics , Inc. (GDI). The program, being conducted by Manager of Employment and Employee Relations Elaine D i t t m e r , w h o was trained by G D I , con-sists of video presentations, related readings and group discussions. Campus Update w i l l keep employees posted on a l l future t r a i n i n g programs. • Purchasing buiietin lists possible requisitions Medica l Campus depart-ments that have surplus equipment or are l o o k i n g to acquire new supplies n o w have a f o r u m through w h i c h they can make transactions w i t h one onother. The Department of Purchasing has begun publ ishing a "Pur-chasing B u l l e t i n , " w h i c h Usts departments ' surplus equipment and other i tems for sale. Th i s b u l l e t i n also includes i n f o r m a t i o n on new purchasing agreements, con-tracts, procedures and any other i tems that may be help-f u l to requis i t ion ing depart-ments. Copies of the b u l l e t i n are sent to a l l Medica l Campus departments. I n the first issue, dis tr ibuted i n late February, such i tems as I B M Selectric n typewriters , a Kodak Ektapr int 2205 Copier and 10,000 mani la , nonclasp envelopes were l is ted. McNary continued from page 1 A n d y Chiou, the president of the Student C o m m i t t e e o n Medical School Affairs , i n t r o -duced the evening as an op-por tuni ty to celebrate McNary ' s c o m m i t m e n t to the School, and "to recognize al l that he's done to make the School a friendlier place." A n d w h a t should come out of such a roast? W e l l , for one t h i n g , the fact that M c N a r y has a propensity for losing his glasses i n rather unusual places. Once, so the story goes, the absent-minded professor of anatomy's glasses dropped, unbeknownst to h i m , i n t o a cadaver's box, and he d idn ' t track them down for a year. (That t i d b i t was provided by Mahair.) McNary ' s o w n w i f e let i t be k n o w n to the audience that his engineering ski l l s were probably not as shar-pened as his anatomical knife , w h e n she recounted that her husband once b u i l t a boat i n the basement of their home that could not f i t through the door. A n d Dean Chobanian con-fessed to the confusion he fel t i n his early days as dean w h e n M c N a r y , w h o m he d i d n ' t k n o w w e l l at the t i m e , w o u l d stop by his office to discuss nonstudent-related problems occuring at the School. The associate dean for student affairs, w h o f irst spent 20 years at the School as a researcher s tudying the respiratory system, wanted to discuss such topics as the care given to the monkeys used i n research, the air f l o w i n the Ubrary, and the Nuclear Regulatory C o m -mission. Dean Emeritus Sandson t o o k some of the responsibi l i ty for M c N a r y ' s mult i faceted involvement i n the School, saying he dis-covered dur ing his tenure as dean that M c N a r y was one person w h o w o u l d never say 'no ' w h e n asked to take on a project. The evening was k i cked off w i t h cocktails and music provided by the stu-dent s tr ing ensemble, the "Music Connection," and proceeded to dinner and the roast. M c N a r y himself took to the p o d i u m at the end of the evening, express-ing his satisfaction w i t h his decision to go i n t o academic medicine, a f ie ld that gave h i m contact w i t h a w i d e group of students and faculty. • Departments can list surplus items available for purchase Purchasing bulletin continued from page 1 l isted quarterly. And all through the School, The Students were nervous. But Mac was real cool. The lists were all done. And sent to that spot. Where goblins and grem-lins. Their mischief do plot. The dean was relaxed— Had little to say, 'Cept, "Don't ask for money, I just will not pay." And Mac and his mummy, And scotch over ice. Had just settled in. For an evening so nice. When out in the hallway. There 'rose such a clatter, Mac sprung from his chair To see what was the matter. When what to his wondering eyes should be seen—A giant computer, all slimy and green. With a bundle of let-ters All tied in a batch, Mac knew in a moment, "It must be the match. "It's Tuesday, it's Tues-day, You're twelve hours too soon. You shouldn't be be here 'Till tomorrow at noon! "Now City, now Sinai, Now Brigham and Wo mens. Back Maiden, Back Grady, Back County and Hopkins. "To the mailbox, the mailbox I order you go. You're twelve hours too early, You're spoiling my show!" And then in a twin-kling The letters did fly. McNary's the one You dare not defy. To the boxes they went. Each one in its place. And Mac was relieved. Had a smile on his face. Back to his office He went with a boast. And said to his mummy As he made one last toast, "They tried it again. Those gremlins were scary. But I taught them: 'Don't fool with Billy McNary.'" He sat in his chair. And had that sly grin. Big Mac had saved Match Day Once again, once again. If this drama seems strange. The point you don't get, Didn't you ever wonder What's in that brown cigarette? • Campus Update A p r i l 1991 /3 Transportation management group gets an update on Central Artery/Tunnel project Route IA W h i l e Boston's Centra l A r t e r y / T u n n e l project is not expected to have an impact on the South End medica l area u n t i l at least 1993, m e m -bers of the Boston U n i v e r s i t y Medica l Center/Boston C i t y H o s p i t a l (BCH) Transporta-t i o n Management Associa-t i o n ( T M A ) m e t last m o n t h w i t h representatives of the Centra l A r t e r y / T u n n e l (CA/T) Project t o be brought up to date o n t h e massive h ighway cons t ruc t ion plan. U s i n g slides and a map, C A / T Regional L ia ison Richard Jarvis presented an overview of the project, ex-p l a i n i n g that the new Centra l A r t e r y w o u l d be con-structed w h i l e keeping the exis t ing elevated artery and tunnels open. "We've made a major c o m m i t m e n t to the C i t y of Boston that w e w i l l keep traff ic m o v i n g , " he said. "We [also] are c o m m i t t e d to keeping pedestrian access ways open," he added. Con-s t ruct ion of the new under-ground roadway, scheduled to be completed i n 1998, is expected to double the capacity of the exist ing elevated h ighway. Current plans for the C A / T project are to r e b u i l d — not to depress—a por t ion of the exist ing Central A r t e r y f r o m Kneeland Street i n C h i n a t o w n to Southampton Street. "This may require commuters to the M e d i c a l Campus area to take s l ight ly different routes—sometimes w i t h improved or s l ight ly dif-ferent accesses," according to engineer Wal ter H e r r i c k of the engineering f i r m Be-chtel/Parsons Brinckerhoff . S t i l l , H e r r i c k noted, project officials encourage Boston commuters to seek altema-t ive modes of transportat ion. The plan also calls for the construct ion of a four-lane, 4,200-f oot- long T h i r d Harbor T u n n e l , scheduled to open i n 1994, w h i c h is intended to ease traff ic f l o w i n and out of Boston's Logan A i r p o r t . The T M A , formed last f a l l by the M e d i c a l Center and Arlery/Tunnel Project The CA/T Project will replace the six-lane, elevated section of the 1-93 Central Artery with a new elght-to-10-lane road, mostly underground, between the Southeast Expressway and Charles-town. It also will extend the 1-90 Mass. Turnpike to Logan Alport via a Seaport Access Road. The South Boston Bypass Road will serve construction traffic generated by the traffic. B C H to address transporta-t i o n and c o m m u t i n g issues for the South End medical area, has already i n s t i t u t e d a campaign to improve publ ic transportat ion options for members of the medical c o m m u n i t y . The C A / T project is cur-r e n t l y a w a i t i n g environ-m e nta l approval f r o m the C o m m o n w e a l t h . C A / T of f i -cials, however, hope to ob-t a i n tha t go-ahead w i t h i n the next several m o n t h s , Jarvis said. • Medical Center hosts hoopathon for Huntington's disease Last year, some 300 people, i n c l u d i n g members of the M e d i c a l Center com-m u n i t y , shot the i r w a y to various degrees of v i c t o r y i n the annual H o o p a t h o n for H u n t i n g t o n ' s Disease, held at the M e d i c a l Center. Th i s year, the H u n t i n g t o n ' s Disease Society of Amer ica is hoping for another w h i r l of free throwers. The 12th annual , 24-hour, free-throw Hoopathon w i l l take place on Thursday, A p r i l 25, i n the Solomon Carter Fuller M e n t a l H e a l t h Center g y m -nasium, beginning at 6 a.m. As always. M e d i c a l Center personnel are welcome to attend the event or to par-t icipate as basketball shooters. Those interested i n par t i c ipat ing should con-tact the executive director of the organization. M a y Long, at 638-8333 (x8333) to sign up and to receive a sponsor sheet. The affair w i l l feature local te levis ion and radio personalities. B i l l Casper, the publisher of this newsletter and an an-n u a l part ic ipant i n the Hoopathon, urges employees and students to j o i n i n the event. H u n t i n g t o n ' s disease is a hereditary, degenerative, neurological disorder that causes physical abnor-mal i t ies and m e n t a l deterioration. One of the disease's characteristics is i n v o l u n t a r y movements of the face and Umbs. Symptoms usual ly appear i n people between the ages of 35 and 40 years, and the disease leads to death i n about 10 to 15 years. Last year, the Hoopathon raised approximately $40,000. • Goldman School offers free clinic The School of Graduate Dent is t ry ' s third-year class w i l l sponsor free i n i t i a l dental exams, x-rays and dental health screenings for a l l members of the greater Boston com-m u n i t y on Friday, A p r i l 12, f r o m 9 to 11:30 a.m. For more i n f o r m a t i o n , cal l 638-4700 (x4700). The c l inic begins on M a y 14, and runs for seven sessions: M a y 14, M a y 2 1 , M a y 28 (Qui t t ing Day), M a y 30, June 4, June 11, June 25 (f inal celebration). • Department profile Control Center tackles everything from heating to bat-catching What's new at Chequers Frozen yogurt , salad by the ounce, and "cheap-thri l l " sandwiches have been added to the roster of offer-ings i n the School of Medicine's Chequers cafeteria, located i n the base-ment of the Ins truct ional Bui lding. These additions were made i n response to the results of the customer-satisfaction survey made i n February. T w o flavors of lowfat frozen yogurt w i l l be offered daily, at 25 cents an ounce. Purists can buy i t i n its natural state, w h i l e the more indulgent can create decadent delights w i t h a variety of toppings. Diners can also build their o w n salads w i t h a w i d e selection of fresh vegetables and dress-ings, for 30 cents an ounce. For those on a budget, there's the "cheap-thr i l l " 3-ounce del i sandwich served w i t h o u t the extras for $2.85. • Students exempt from tax in Campus cafeterias Students w h o display v a l i d IDs to cashiers are exempt f r o m the state sales tax on food served i n the School of Medicine 's Chequers cafeteria and the C o l d m a n School of Graduate Dent is t ry ' s Rite Bite Cafe. Students are exempt under a state law that applies to educational ins t i tut ions . Faculty and staff are not ex-empt f r o m the sales tax on meals. • If the r o o m temperature i n some remote re-search laboratory at the Medical Center dips below or above its regulated level , the ramif icat ions can be disastrous for a sensitive re-search project. If a bat is found i n someone's office, the discoverer may reckon that the con-sequences are even worse. To contend w i t h such problems, and a host of others, i n -c luding fires, the Medica l Center C o n t r o l Center is on hand 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This office, located i n the basement of the Ins t ruc t ion-al Bui lding, is, i n the words of John C l i f t , the manager of operations and m a i n -tenance for the Medica l Campus, "the nerve center of the Medica l Center." Heading the office is Henry "Hank" L. B r o w n , w h o has held his lead post for nine years, and has served the office for a t o t a l of 14 years. Four other m e n are on the staff, as w e l l . Each of the f ive m e n serve on one-person shifts . The C o n t r o l Center's m a i n job is to m o n i t o r the environmental controls throughout the M e d i c a l Center, chief ly w i t h the help of a computer that provides an account of the heating and cooling condi-tions i n most of the rooms i n the complex. The com-puter indicates any mal -Hank Brown, senior technician at the Control Center funct ions i n such sensitive areas as the animal contain-m e n t rooms, and enables the technicians to alter, start and stop the systems. T h e technicians also m o n i t o r f ire alarms for the m a j o r i t y of the complex, and respond to such emer-gencies as floods and ex-plosions. T h e C o n t r o l Center also refers emergency calls relat-i n g t o operations and main-tenance to the appropriate mechanics, so that t i m e l y f o l l o w - u p is ensured. "People call when they are s tuck i n elevators, need someone to unplug a toi let , and even w h e n they need direct ions on how to get to the Medica l Center." The i m p o r t a n t s k i l l . Brown said, is " k n o w i n g w h a t to do w i t h each call ." I n an emergency, contact the C o n t r o l Center at 638-5555 (x5555).
