The event was held in the George Sherman Ballroom on the Charles River Campus. In honor of their distinguished service and contribution to the University, those employees who have served for 10 years received anniver-sary silver-plated Paul Revere bowls wi th their names and terms of service inscribed on them. Twenty-five-year veterans received mantle clocks, while those retiring received Boston University chairs. In total, 66 employees from the Medical Campus were honored. Of those, 33 attended the dinner. Speaking at the event, Bos-ton University President John Silber said, "Since students not only come but go, if the University is successful in its educational mission, it must look on campus to its faculty and staff for the continuities on which its fulfillment depends. It is fitting that we recognize these continuities of service by a continuing event, our annual Service Recognition Dinner. On be-half of all at Boston Univer-sity, I express thanks for that portion of your lives you have given to i t , and the hope that all of you have received from it no less than you have given." • For a list of tho^e employees honored, see page 4. BUSM Class of '91 graduates Michael Babich (left) and Matthew BassignanI enjoy a light moment during commencement BUSM graduates urged to listen and be respectful of patients Graduates of the School of Medicine were sent off with words of insight and advice from two highly respected men at the commencement ceremonies held for Boston University on May 12. Eduard A. Shevardnadze, former Soviet foreign mini-ster, addressed graduates at the all-University commence-ment program held on the Charles River Campus. Robert Coles, M.D., a profes-sor of psychiatry and medical humanities at Harvard Medi-cal School, then spoke to the School of Medicine Class of 1991 at BUSM exercises, held at the Case Center. Coles is the author of many books on children. In 1973, he won a Pulitzer prize for volumes two and three of Children in Crisis. Coles told his audience of 145 graduates and their families and friends that he considered the fundamental role of a physician to be hsten-ing to and respecting one's patients. He also spoke of the reahty physicians must face in dealing wi th patients in dis-tress. "As physicians, this w i l l be our struggle: the con-sequences of poverty, suffer-ing, injustice," he said. "Let us listen and be respectful, and hear the poems in our patients—the poetry of their lives." The School of Medicine Class of 1991 included seven students who graduated magna cum laude, 13 who graduated cum laude, and two students who received both M.D. and Ph.D. degrees. Fifty-women and 36 minority students graduated. The class as a whole represented 19 states, a U.S. territory and eight foreign countries. • Campus Update June/July 1991 /2 Students to participate in biomedical laboratory program Ten minority students and two science teachers from high schools in the Greater Boston area have been chosen to participate in a biomedical laboratory-research appren-ticeship program at the School of Medicine this sum-mer. The eight-week pro-gram, funded by a grant from the National Institutes of Health (MH) and the Nation-al Center for Research Resour-ces (NCRR), w i l l enable the participants to learn research tools and techniques of the biomedical research laboratory. Each student w i l l receive approximately $1,500, and each teacher w i l l receive approximately $4,500. The program wUl ran from July 8 through the end of August. More than 100 students and teachers applied to the program. Boston City Hospi-tal w i l l run the same program through its Boston Area Health and Education Cen-ter program (BAHEC), as w i l l Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medi-cal School. • Free glaucoma screening offered Employees of the Medical Center are invited to receive a free glaucoma screening on Thursday, June 20, at the Cunderson Eye Center on the lOth floor of the Doctors Office Building. The screen-ing clinic w i l l be held from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and from 1:00 to 3:30 p.m. The exam takes 10 minutes and w i l l not dilate the eyes. • William J. Parking sticker renewal underway Medical Campus commuters who park in the Medical Center's Lot A, Lot C, Lot D or Lot T, must renew their park-ing stickers during June. A l l permits expire on June 30. Let-ters explaining the registration process, which can be com-pleted through the mail, w i l l be issued soon. • Huntington's Hoopathon puils in $35,( Some 200 faculty, staff, stu-dents and friends of the Medical Center turned out in April to shoot for loot, in the annual Hoopathon for Huntington's Disease. Their efforts earned an estimated $35,000 for the Huntington's Disease Society of America, and drew such special guests as a team of students from Perkins School for the Blind, Boston-area sports an-nouncer Jim Colony and newscaster Jim Boyd (WCVB-TV). The New England chap-ter of the society is located at The University Hospital. The money earned sub-sidizes half of the chapter's yearly budget. Most of the money goes to patient ser-vices, including a weekend camp that is held once a summer at the Boston University camp in Peter-borough, N.H. • Gene Blatt, an assistant research professor In the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology, sunk 110 baskets, earning $71.40 for the Huntington's Disease Society's fund. Attention bike commuters Medical Campus employees who bike to work must park their bicycles in racks, accord-ing to John SuUivan, director of Parking Ser-vices. Those bikes parked elsewhere may be removed or immobi-lized. The bicycle racks lo-cated at the entrance to the School of Medicine are restricted to use by Boston University stu-dents, faculty and staff. Additional bicycle racks soon w i l l be located in parking Lot A. Please communicate concerns regarding the availability of bicycle racks to the Office of Parking Services, Room R-I02, 638-4915 (x49I5).n Campus Update June/July 1991 /3 A TRIBUTE TO WILLIAM F. MCNARY JR., PH.D. "He was the man who made arms move, and pulses race, and nerves tingle" Members of the Medical Cam-pus community filled the Hiebert Lounge on May 24 for a final salute to a well-loved man, Will iam F. McNary Jr., Ph.D., the School's first dean of student affairs, who died of cancer on May 19. McNary's impact on a multitude of stu-dents, faculty and ad-ministrators alike during 41 years of service was tremen-dous, and was evident in the packed crowd that filled the Hiebert Lounge for his memorial. Over and over again in the speeches made that day, McNary was described as a man gifted wi th the capacity to love and in-spire, a man who lived his life w i th courage and humor. McNary introduced more than two-thirds of the living alumni of the School to gross anatomy, spent much of his time writing recommenda-tions for students applying for residencies, and gave count-less students the guidance and morale hoost that they needed to succeed in their studies. In his view, he was simply the "father confessor." To his colleague Lawrence C. ZoUer, Ph.D., an associate professor of anatomy, "He was the man who made arms move, and pulses race, and nerves tingle." At the memorial, referring to his at-tempt to assume some of McNary's teaching duties, he said, "Let me ask you: Have you ever attempted to sit in for Michelangelo in the mid-dle of a painting course, or come in to pitch a game right after Roger Clemens pitched a no-hitter?" He was "the Merlin of his trade," ZoUer said. "When he ascended the platform, magic filled the soul." So touched was former stu-dent Harold Reitman'74, by this man that he came back to the School every year since his graduation to work alongside McNary teaching gross anatomy. Reitman is lV////am F. McNary Jr., Ph.D., graced the halla of the School of Medicine for 41 years, giving warmth, love and support to generations of students, faculty and administrators. an orthopedic surgeon in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. "Even when 'Dr. Mac' was dying," Reitman told the gathering at the memorial service, " I still called him last week with my problems. That's just the way he was. He was the one you called." Student Affairs Officer Susan Mahair worked alongside McNary for almost 15 years. In her view, "McNary was many things to all of us," she said, "But most of all, he was a teacher—not just of gross anatomy, but of life." Who else could have attended his own toast and a roast when he was dying—and enjoy it? At the memorial ser-vice, ZoUer reflected on the School's loss of McNary this way: "As long as we...likeDr. Mac, give in-sight, experience and inspira-tion; as long as we can laugh and smUe and waggle our arms Uke faUopian tubes; and, most importantly, every time we Usten and provide com-fort, BUI McNary Uves." He was "a man of uncommon vir-tue," said his friend. Rev. Larry Burton, former chaplain of The University Hospital. He is clearly a rare soul. • Honors stand in testimony to Biil McNary A testimony of the respect that the School of Medicine community has for BiU McNary, two honors were be-stowed on him during the spring. The graduating class of 1991 honored him by estab-lishing the William F. McNary Jr. Award in celebra-tion of his 41 years of service to the School. The award wUl be presented annuaUy to the member of each graduat-ing class who best demonstrates the spirit of leadership and service that McNary exemplified. The School as a whole, meanwhUe, has aimounced plans to establish a Student Learning Resource Center at the School i n McNary's honor. The center wiU in-clude modern teaching faculties w i th state-of-the-art audiovisual equipment. The School has set $500,000 as the goal to estabUsh the fund in order to create an outstand-ing center. "Because BiU McNary has meant so much to so many of our alumni, it is expected that a significant portion of this sum wiU come from the alumni," said BUSM Dean Aram V. Chobanian.
