Themost remarkable examples known in Portugal have beensampled from volcano-sedimentary tufts interbedded withbasaltic flows of the Volcanic Complex ofLisbon (Cotter,1901; Roman, 1917; Choffat, 1950; Zbyszewsk i & Jesus,1954; Zbyszcwski, 1963).These rich and nicely-preservedfaunas ar e a remarkab le evidenc e o f the primitiveStylommatophora that inhabited the emerged lands ofWestern Europe, during Late Mesozoic times.An additional assemblage ofland snails with exceptionalspeci mens, ana logous to the faunas of the Volcan icComplex of Lisbon, was found some years ago, on theupper part of the promontory of Nazare (littoral of WestCentral Portu gal). This assemblage was sampled fromconglomerates and red clays of Campanian-Maastrichtianage (Sitio da Nazare Formation, Antunes, 1979), and iscurrently in course ofstudy.Also recently, P. Callapez (2002) described a newfauna of small freshwater gas tro pods from the LatePalaeocene-Early Eoce ne of the Silveirinha Forma tion(Figueira da Foz), but with a taxonomic structure ratherdifferent from the assemblages mentioned above.Both fossil faunas, of Lisbon and Nazare, have in com-mon the frequency of Anadromus ribeiroi (Tournouer,1879), a large terrestrial species with a solid and conical-ovate shell, which is a typical member of the Late Creta-ceous family Anadromidae. A few other examples related71Ciencias da Terra (UN L). 15with the genus Anadromus have also been recorded fromcontinental sediments exposed in thc regions of Aveiro--Viso (Choffat, 1900, 1902) and Baixo Mondcgo (Antunes& Pais 1978). As a rule, these records are limited to poorlypreserved and distorted intern a l moulds of difficultclassification. Nevertheless, the stratigraphic range of thesemoulds was used for several times as a complement to thevertebrate and palaeobotanic data, suggesting a LateCampanian or Maastrichtian age.The present pape r intends to confirm the occurrenceof Anadromus in the region of Baixo Mondego, after thedescription of a new species found in siliciclastic sedimentsof the clay-pi ts of Taveiro, near Coimbra. Th e typespecimens are a set of composite moulds already mentionedas "Bulimus ga udryi" by M. Antunes & J. Pais (1978).Geo logic sett ingThe Late Cretaceous sedimentary record of the BaixoMondego rcgion cnds with a succession of cont inentalyellow sandstones and reddish clays, usually designatedas Taveiro Format ion (=Areias eArgilas de Taveiro, Rochaet al., 1981; Soares et al., 1982; Reis, 1981) (fig. I) . Witha maximum thickness ofnearly 200 meters, this successionrests unconformably on upper Cretaceous alluvial andmari ne sands tones (Oi. Forma tion and Furad ouroFormation, Barbosa et aI., 1988), as well on Cenomanianand Turon ia n p latform ca rbonates (Costa d ' AmesFormation, Rocha et al., 1981; = Carbonate Formation,Soares, 1966, 1980).The Taveiro Formation has bcen thc bulk of numerousstudies on palaeontology, with emphasis in the descriptionof abundant faunas of fossil vertebrates (Antunes, 1979;Antunes & Pais, 1978; Antunes et al., 1986; Antunes &Brain , 1988). The stratigraphic setting and the obviousimp ort ance of th e un it in th c La te Cretace ouspaleogeograph ic evolution ofthe West Portuguese Margin,northwards the Nazare-Leiria-Pombal fault system, werealso analysed by A. Soares (1966), M. Antunes & J. Pais(197 8), A. Soares & R. Reis (1980), R. Rcis (1981, 1998,2000), R. Reis & R. Meyer (1982), P. Cunha ( 1992 ), andP. Cunha & R. Reis (1992, 1995).The last of thcse studiespointed to the existence of a large alluvial plain, with ameandering system oriented northwcstwards and controlledby tectonic reactivations and uplifts along the "Nazarefault" and related diapiric axis.The internal moulds of Anadromus were found in thelower part of the Taveiro Formation, in layers of reddishcarbonated silts and clays exposed bellow a conglomeraticbed with vertebrate bones (Antunes & Pais 1978). Thealluvial plain palaeoenvironm ents subjacent to thesesediments are congruent with the ceologic requirementspresumed to Anadromidae: a family of archaic land snails,with species adap ted to the life in emerged areas situatednear the proximity of freshwater environments.Systematic pa laeontologyThe next sys tematic descr iption follows A.
