                  Report of the Seventh meeting of the  imGoats Jhadol-Kanthariya Innovation Platform (IP)     25st June 2012  Jhadol, Udaipur district, Rajasthan, India 1 Seventh Innovation Platform meeting report General information Name of Innovation Platform: Jhadol-Kantharia Innovation Platform  Location of meeting: Ankur Hall, Jhadol  Facilitators: Mr.Dhanna lal Ahari and Mr. Bheemraj Dungri (Field guides) supported by B G Rathore, Nikhilesh Modi, Dr. Bhatnagar  Date and time: 25 June 2012, 11 AM to 2.30PM  A. Who is present?  (Please refer to Annexure 1) In the seventh meeting, the goat keeper representatives from each of the village were present. The detailed list of participants is given in Annexure 1.  B. Agenda of the meeting (Please refer to Annexure 2)        C. Action items from the previous meeting and progress  Action item-1 Intermediate meeting by IP members to take stock of action plans prepared in sixth IP meeting What was done? The field guides and community representatives met at BAIF field office in Jhadol on 11th May 2012 to revise and reschedule some of the action plans. What were the results?  The members were informed about the delay in procurement of ET vaccinations due to shortage of vaccines at the Animal Husbandry department. Accordingly, the dates for health camps were changed.   The dates for 3-5 day training programme at Krishi Vignan Kendra in Udaipur were discussed. The possible date for the training programme was set as 21-26th May 2012.  Some new health issues in goats were reported and solutions discussed. The health issues included: Fascioliosis, Contagious Ecthyma, Licking of walls (indication of mineral deficiency)    Share results from systematic faecal sample tests  Precautionary measures to be taken in the coming monsoon season to avoid worms  Take stock of the medical kits of the field guides  2 What went well? The intermediate meeting helped in updating the members about change in plans. Also, it provided an opportunity to meet between the IPs and discuss some more emerging issues and develop plans for these. What did not work well?  Why?  What is the priority action now? Follow up on the revised schedule and also develop strategies for tackling the new issues.    Action item-2 Training of goat keeper representatives/ field guides at Krishi Vignan Kendra (KVK), Udaipur What was done?  Training programme was organized from 21-23rd May 2012 at the training centre in Krishi Vignan Kendra (a government run agriculture training centre) What were the results?  Breed improvement – Importance of Sirohi breed in the area in terms of productivity as compared to non-descript breeds – By Dr. Praful Bhatnagar, KVK  Health care – Diagnosis of diseases, symptoms, home remedies, sanitation and hygiene – By Dr. Bhatnagar and Dr. Bharadwaj  Visit to the farm – Sirohi unit – To understand the management practices for maintaining Sirohi bucks and does  Nutritional aspects – By Dr. Shyam Bihari Vyas, KVK  Orientation to Silvi-pasture development – By Narendra Jain, Seva Mandir (NGO)  Orientation towards formation and working of Self Help Groups (SHGs) – By Mr. Prabhulal Salvi (Seva Mandir, NGO in Udaipur) and Mr. Heeralal Sharma (Sahyog Sansthan, NGO-Udaipur) (For more details, refer Annexure) What went well? The field guides got an exposure to diverse topics and also an opportunity to interact with researchers and experienced NGO personnel. What did not work well?  Why?  What is the priority action now? Field guides to follow up on the learnings    3 Action item-3 Distribution of seeds / samplings of fodder tree species What was done? Subabul seed (5 kg) seed was purchased from a private seed supplier at Udaipur @ INR 38 per kg.  What were the results? Plans are made to distribute subabul seed @ of 100 per household.  What went well? A local farmer in Kantharia was identified to prepare about 3000 sesbania seedlings. Sesbania seed was supplied to the farmer. The saplings will be available for distribution in the month of August. The farmer will be paid INR 3.00 per seedling.  What did not work well?  Why?  What is the priority action now? The field guides will prepare a list of interested households to take up plantations. Accordingly, subabul seed will be distributed @ 100 seed per household (in June-July) and 20 sesbania saplings per household (in August)    Action item-4 Enterotoxaemia (ET) vaccination What was done? Village-wise health camps were organized wherein animals were vaccinated and given primary treatment for injuries. What were the results? A total of 1582 animals were vaccinated for Enterotoximia in Kantharia cluster. What went well?  What did not work well? The planned ET vaccination schedule got delayed due to shortage of vaccines at the Animal husbandry department. In Jhadol cluster, the health camps could not be conducted as per schedule as the concerned supervisor resigned.  Why? The Animal Husbandry Department at Udaipur as well as in Jaipur ran out of ET vaccines and did not have enough stock for supply.  What is the priority action now? Finally, the vaccines were procured from private pharmacist @INR 1.7 per vaccine. This is higher than the subsidized price of Animal Husbandry department (@ INR 0.5 per vaccine).    D. To whom, when and how will progress be reported? 4 Results of faecal sample test – Formats to be prepared for getting feedback from the goatkeepers   The results of faecal samples to be organized in a simple form – Date of sample taken, date of sample tested, Result: Positive or Negative, If +ve, Type of eggs found, Suggested dewormer and dosage   Compilation of this information to be done by the supervisor     Project Officer to monitor Treatment of Contagious Ecthyma   Application of Potassium permanganate was advised – To make a solution and apply on the lesions Supervisors and field guides to undertake the treatment as per need Report back the experiences in the next IP and also to Vet. Officer, AHD Distribution of fodder tree species  A list of interested households to be prepared Field guides BAIF internal monitoring Field guides to take stock of their respective medical kits  Field guides will prepare list of medicines used, diseases treated, medicines that need to be replenished, any new medicines needed Field guides to prepare list with support of supervisors BAIF internal monitoring Plan for Enterotoxaemia (ET) vaccination    Health camps to be undertaken in Jhadol cluster  BAIF team with support from Animal Husbandry department BAIF internal monitoring  E. Other issues discussed and decisions taken (like transport, communication etc)  As decided in the 6th IP meeting, the local pharmacist displayed the medicines available with him and shared his contact details with all the field guides. He suggested that it would be better if the all the field guides gave him a list medicines at one time.  For the medicines that are not available with him, it would be easier for him to procure medicines in bulk.          5 Dr.Bhatnagar (Veterinary Officer, AHD, Udaipur) suggested precautionary measures to be taken to prevent occurrence of endoparasites in the coming monsoon season. The following are the suggestions:  Hang the lopped branches instead of throwing on the ground to prevent contamination  Provide clean drinking water  Avoid goats from feeding on grasses on the edge of ponds/ tanks  Avoid goats from getting wet in the rains  Avoid cold places in the house and keep goats in dry and clean place  Give dewormer after the rains  Regular cleaning of goat shelters  F. Time and location of next meeting    The date for next IP meeting is tentatively agreed as August 9th, 2012. Seek suggestions and discuss how to run the IP in the future—who will take initiative to coordinate and facilitate, location? (From among the community representatives and field guides)  1.30 PM: Next IP meeting date and concluding remarks 8     Annexure 3  Summary of the 3-day training event at Krishi Vignan Kendra (KVK), Badgaon, Udaipur  Breed improvement using Sirohi bucks – Dr. Praful Bhatnagar, KVK  Breed improvement using Sirohi bucks; Prevention of in-breeding;   Rotation of breeding bucks every two years;   Knowledge of age of goats by observing the teeth;   Provision of special feed for breeding bucks;   Importance of maintaining service records  Health care elements -- Dr. Bhatnagar and Dr. Bharadwaj, Regional Disease Diagnostic Laboratory, Animal Husbandry Department  Reasons for occurrence of diseases, importance of vaccinations to prevent diseases;   Contagious diseases and its reasons (virus, protozoa, fungus etc.)—Preventive steps;  Important diseases – Symtoms (Contagious Ecthyma, PPR, ET, Jones disease, Goat pox, Brucellosis  Role of diagnostic tests—Blood, faecal, rumen fluid  Procedures to treat goats in case of ingestion of poisonous plants such as lantana, Acacia leaucoploea—Treatment with Sodium thiosulphate (5gms orally at 1 hour intervals until symptoms abate)  or Activated charcoal (50-100 gms orally),   For indigestion -- Check rumen fluid using pH strips; if pH is > 7, give 5% acetic acid as per need; if pH is <7, use sodium bicarbonate (30-50 gms with water).
