For the last two decades, CGIAR centres have focused their research on commodities that provide75% of the food energy and protein requirements in developing countries. Agricultural production inthese areas would be poorer by several million tons of staple food without CGIAR­supportedresearch. But as successful as the centres have been in increasing food productivity, the Group aftertwo years of deliberations is changing its emphasis in recognition that the full benefits of globalagricultural research—such as breeding more productive varieties of staple crops and improvinglivestock management and health—are unattainable if not complemented by improved naturalresource management and stronger national research institutions.Upcoming ISCTRC MeetingThe 21st Meeting of the International Scientific Council for Trypanosomiasis Research and Control(ISCTRC) will be held in Yamoussoukro, Côte D'Ivoire, 21–25 October 1991. The 8th TrainingSeminar on African Trypanosomiasis Control, sponsored by the Food and Agriculture Organization,the Organization of African Unity and the World Health Organization, will also be held inYamoussoukro, immediately before the ISCTRC meeting, from 14 to 19 October 1991. Nominationsfor people in the medical, veterinary and entomological fields to attend the seminar should be sent toDr. Walter Masiga, Director, OAU/IBAR, P.O. Box 30786, Nairobi, Kenya.ILRAD scientist awardedThe first Wellcome Trust Medal for Veterinary Research and the Keith Sinclair Prize were presentedto Dr. Ivan Morrison during the annual conference of the Association of Veterinary Teachers andResearch Workers (UK). Dr. Morrison graduated from Glasgow Veterinary School in 1972 and is aformer Wellcome Trust scholar. He worked at ILRAD from 1975 through 1989, where he conductedand supervised research on Theileria parva, the protozoan parasite that causes East Coast fever inAfrican livestock, and helped to elucidate the operations of the bovine immune system. Dr. Morrisonis now Head of Immunology and Pathology at the Agricultural and Food Research Council's Institutefor Animal Health (Compton, UK).The Wellcome Trust Medal is awarded to encourage veterinary research by recognition ofexcellence. The Keith Sinclair Prize is given in memory of Wellcome's Deputy Director who for tenyears ran the veterinary program of the Wellcome Trust.Dr. Morrison said he was honoured to receive the awards. At ILRAD, he explained, he had beenfortunate to encounter an interesting parasite whose relationship with the bovine immune system hespent the next 15 years unravelling. He said he had also been fortunate in the colleagues with whomhe worked over the years, who had done much of the work for which he was being recognized.ILRAD Ph.D.ThesisTrypanosome infection causes dysfunction of the pituitary glandThe physiological and metabolic disturbances in animals infected with trypanosomes includeanaemia, loss of body weight, poor immune response, intolerance to stress and poor reproductiveperformance. All of these could be due to an imbalance of certain humoral factors.Hormones regulate important body functions. They are produced by endocrine glands. Thehypothalamic­pituitary­adrenal (HPA) axis of the endocrine system is particularly important.Glucocorticoids, for example, which are secreted by the adrenal gland, are known to be potentmodulators of the immune system.In view of the observed endocrine dysfunction during trypanosome infection, the effects of infectionon the integrity of the HPA axis in Boran (Bos indicus) cattle was investigated. In a series ofexperiments undertaken over the last four years, a total of 70 Boran cattle were experimentallyinfected with Trypanosoma congolense IL 1180, transmitted by tsetse flies.Four weeks after fly challenge, basal cortisol, ACTH and thyroxine (T4) levels were lower in infectedthan in the control cattle, supporting the belief that trypanosome infection impairs the HPA axis andthe thyroid gland. After stimulating the pituitary gland with exogenous bovine corticotropin releasingfactor (bCRF), mean concentrations of both cortisol and ACTH were lower in infected animals thanin the controls. When challenged with insulin to cause acute hypoglycaemia, the HPA axis of infectedcattle failed to respond, whereas the axis of the control animals did respond, as documented bysignificant increases in cortisol and plasma ACTH concentrations.The evidence of these experiments suggests that the low responsiveness of the HPA axis to bCRFand insulin during trypanosome infection is due to an impaired pituitary response. The dysfunction ofthe pituitary could be mediated by direct and/or indirect effects of trypanosome infection. A directeffect on the pituitary secretory cells might be made by any of a wide range of biologically activefactors reportedly secreted by bloodstream form trypanosomes, namely phospholipase­A, proteasesand peptidases. Indirect effects might be made by the highly activated immune system oftrypanosome­infect
