Suicida na Adolescência (Castilho, Barreto Carvalho, Nunes e Pinto-Gouveia, 2012), The Risk-
Taking and Self-Harm Inventory for Adolescents (Xavier, Pinto-Gouveia, & Cunha, 2011) e
Self-harm is currently a public health problem, since incidence rates on this
issue are increasing with risks and consequences not only physically but also psychologically
and socially. The environment and family dynamics show to be related to SH or with
precipitating factors of the same. Thus, the present study aims to evaluate the relationship
between SH, cohesion, flexibility and family communication and to describe the variables
considering gender, age and contexts of belonging. The instruments applied were: Impulso,
Autodano and Suicidal Ideation in Adolescence (Castilho, Barreto Carvalho, Nunes and Pinto-
Gouveia, 2012), The Risk-Taking and Self-Harm Inventory for Adolescents (Xavier, Pinto-
Gouveia, & Cunha , 2011) and the Flexibility and Family Cohesion Assessment Scale - FACES
IV (Sequeira, Cerveira, Neves, Silva, Espirito-Santo, Guadalupe & Vicente, 2015) and the
Sociodemographic Questionnaire. The sample consisted of 398 adolescents, 51.3% girls with a
mean age of 17 years. The results allowed to conclude that 19.6% of the total sample had
practiced SH throughout their lives. The study concludes that there is a high prevalence of SH
among adolescents, with significant differences between genders. In addition, the study
confirmed SH correlation and cohesion, flexibility and family communication in adolescents
