Modular inflated shells – a computational approach

Abstract

This paper presents the results of the first phase of work on developing computational model of inflated modular shells. This type of bending active structures is composed of relatively small, modular inflatable cushions combined with cables and crossbraces. The structure is self-erecting. Introduction of tension to the cable gives it shape and load carrying capacity. The initial experiments confirmed their technological feasibility. At the present stage the relationship between tensile force in the cable, and the initial deformation of the structure were analyzed. Modular shell was approximated by an elastic rod. The impact of the internal structure of the coating on the computational model is the subject of further research
