They promise big savingsin time and energy, so important in today's busyworld. But what does all this mean when it comesright down to the selection, use and care of suchfinishes?PERMANENT PRESS - WHAT IS IT?This fabric finish has been engineered so care-fully that a crease is not removable and wrinklesdo not readily form. The garment retains its shapethroughout life with sharp creases, flat seams,smooth surface appearance and no seam puckeringwithout ironing.Permanent press differs from other easy carefinishes in that permanent press is positively noironing. Other easy care finishes such as durable·Extension clothing specialists, Texas A&M University.press may need touch up ironing. An ease-of-carefinish requires ironing after laundry and wearingbut has good wrinkle resistance.What to Look For• Smoothness-no set-in wrinkles or packagingwrinkles.• Even color-no streaks or blotches of color.• Flat seams and details-puckered stitchinglines will appear even more so after laundry.• No odor-odor indicates excess resin or im-proper curing of finish.• Fiber content of at least 50 percent polyester-gives adequate strength to the fabric.• Good fit-new seams lines will never be as flatand creases will never be as permanent as theold, so alterations are a problem.CarePermanent press has everything but perfectcleanability. The finish attracts oils, but is resistantto V\Tater, and detergents cannot penetrate. Becauseof the permanent finish, clothes tend to look fresherlonger, and needed washing often is delayed.How to Laundry• Launder according to the most heat-sensitivefiber in the blend.• Turn garments inside out before launderil}gto help prevent discoloration and wear alongcrease lines.• Thoroughly tumble-dry and remove from thedryer as soon as dryer has stopped, to preventwrinkling. Line-dry only heavy fabrics withenough weight to hang out wrinkles by them-selves.• Pretreat stains by soaking in a small amountof liquid detergent, and then launder accord-ing to instruction.• Sponge oily stains with a safe cleaning fluidbefore laundering.Sewing with Permanent Press• A simple pattern with few seams and detailsgives best results.• Preshrink zi.ppers and interfacings before ap-plication.3.4T• Set the machine for 10 to 12 stitches per inchand use sizes 11 or 14 needle.• Use a regular throat plate with a small roundhole rather than zig-zag plate with oval hole.• When the zipper is inserted, ease the zippertape to the placket area to minimize puck-ering.Disadvantages of Permanent PressPermanent press fabric may:• Be warm because it is nonabsorbent.• Wear out faster at seams and creases thansimilar products without the finish.• Have permanent soil and staining problems.SOIL RELEASE - WHAT IS IT?There are two types of soil release-soil repel-lency and soil release. A fabric treated with a soilrepellent finish resists the absorption of soils orstains, such as water and oil. Such a finish is com-monly known as Zepel, .scotchgard and Dual-ActionScotchgard. A soil release finish allows the fabricto release -soil in cleaning more readily than doesuntreated fabric. Trade names are Come Clean,X-It, Visa and Fybrite. A soil release finish doesnot guarantee stain release.CareSojl-repellent finish:• Needs thorough rinsing after cleaning sincedetergents left in the fabric will interfere with~oil repellency.• Pressing is recommended after laundering tohelp restore stain resistance.• Oil stains may need spot. cleaning with solvent.• Laundering, as well as wear, reduces soil re-pellency.Soil-release finish:• Attracts water so soil is more easily washedaway, but stains still need pre-spotting withdetergent.• Oily stains need to be sponged with a safecleaning fluid before laundering.• Any stain not removed during laundering maybe heat set if ironed.• Sponge aged stains with a full-strength de-tergent solution for an hour or more beforelaundering.PREMANENT PRESS COMBINEDWITH SOIL RELEASEA combination of permanent press and soil re-lease has given extra features to fabrics. Oily stainstended to be a problem with permanent pressfabrics. Soil releasing finishes applied to the fab-rics reduce the attraction between fibers and oilysoil. The combined finishes release normal soilsand stains of both the oil and water-borne varietyin one wash, using the normal amounts of deter-gent and normal washing temperatures, and thefabrics remain permanently pressed.Cooperative Extension Work in Agriculture and Home Economics, Texas A&M University and the United States Department ofAgriculture cooperating.
