José Risueño, a versatile artist serving the Granada Cathedral

Abstract

José Risueño, una de las figuras más interesantes del barroco tardío granadino, encontraría en el arzobispo Martín de Ascargorta su principal mecenas y valedor. Esta relación dio pie a toda una serie de encargos para la catedral de Granada, que son objeto de estudio en este trabajo. En él analizamos su vertiente de pintor y escultor, aportando una pintura inédita para su catálogo: una Virgen de las Angustias firmada y fechada en 1698. Asimismo, ofrecemos nuevas noticias sobre algunas facetas desconocidas del artista, quien trabajó como restaurador, tasador, copista y cantor al servicio de la catedral.José Risueño, one of the most interesting figures of late Baroque Granada, found in Archbishop Martin de Ascargorta his main patron and supporter. This relationship led to a series of commissions for the Cathedral of Granada, which are studied in this work. It analyzed the slope of painter and sculptor, providing a new painting to its catalog: a Virgin of Anguish signed and dated in 1698. We also provide new information about some unknown facets of the artist, who worked as a restorer, appraiser, copyist and singer in the cathedral
