AbstractThe European CCS Demonstration Project Network was initiated by the European Commission in 2009. The main objective of the network is to accelerate development of CCS technologies by creating a forum for exchange and dissemination of new knowledge generated by the first large scale CCS plants in Europe. This paper provides an overview and understanding of the activities of the network and the political and theoretical context of their development. The paper focuses on how the Network has been structured to add value to demonstration projects and create vital new channels of information for enabling CCS demonstration and deployment to be advanced worldwide

La expansión y dispersión de las ciudades junto con la mejora de las comunicaciones facilita la integración de campo y ciudad y dificulta la distinción de los entornos urbanos y rurales. Sin embargo, la correcta aplicación de políticas agrarias o de desarrollo rural, la regulación y planificación del crecimiento urbano o la protección de los espacios medioambientales o culturales requiere de técnicas que ayuden a delimitar y graduar con precisión el territorio urbano y rural. En este trabajo se propone un procedimiento de clasificación del territorio apoyado en índices de concentración/dispersión de la edificación o la población y en medidas de accesibilidad que es posible elaborar usando modelos digitales del terreno y cartografía de redes de transporte. A modo de ilustración aplicamos el procedimiento propuesto al caso de Asturias, especialmente interesante por su complejidad urbana –con una metrópoli dispersa y policéntrica en el centro de la región–, como por su diversidad rural –con espacios rurales periurbanos, turísticos y netamente agrarios–. La combinación de los indicadores mediante componentes principales arroja una clasificación del territorio en cinco niveles de urbanización que ayudan a clasificar una región compleja como Asturias.L'expansió i dispersió de les ciutats, juntament amb la millora de les comunicacions facilita la integració de camp i ciutat i dificulta la distinció dels entorns urbans i rurals. No obstant això, la correcta aplicació de polítiques agràries o de desenvolupament rural, la regulació i planificació del creixement urbà o la protecció dels espais mediambientals o culturals requereix de tècniques que ajudin a delimitar i graduar amb precisió el territori urbà i rural. En aquest treball es proposa un procediment de classificació del territori recolzat en índexs de concentració/dispersió de l'edificació o la població i en mesures d'accessibilitat que és possible elaborar usant models digitals del terreny i cartografia de xarxes de transport. Com a il·lustració apliquem el procediment proposat al cas d'Astúries, especialment interessant per la seva complexitat urbana -amb una metròpoli dispersa i policèntrica al centre de la regió-, com per la seva diversitat rural -amb espais rurals periurbans, turístics i netament agraris-. La combinació dels indicadors mitjançant components principals entrega una classificació del territori en cinc nivells d'urbanització que ajuden a classificar una regió complexa com Astúries.The growth and sprawl of current cities combined with the improvement of communications generate a higher integration of rural and urban spaces making difficult to distinguish one from another. However, to properly apply agrarian or rural policies as well as to planning the growth of the surroundings of the urban areas or to protect natural environments it is necessary to delimitate accurately urban or rural spaces. In this work a procedure to classify the territory based in indexes of building concentration or dispersion, using geographical information systems, combined with accessibility and density measures is proposed. As an illustration of how the procedure works it is applied to the case of Asturias, a region with a polycentric disperse urban area in the centre with diverse rural spaces in the periphery. The proposed combination of indicators, using principal components, allows obtaining a classification of the territory in five levels of urbanization being possible to identify very accurately the real rural areas of the region. Peer Reviewe
