The substrate in these habitats inBangkir was generally sand, mud or occasionally rockywith vegetation consisting of grasses: Colocasia esculen-ta, Selaginella plana, Derris elliptica, Alocasia macro-rhiza, Diplazium esculentum, and Vitis trifolia.This study also proved that the Labonu population hasbeen infected by the nematode Falcaustra kutcheri (Fig.3), recently described by Bursey et al. (2000).I strongly recommend that the Indonesian governmentoffer protection to L. yuwonoi because it is an endemicspecies with a highly limited geographic distribution and isseriously threatened by habitat destruction and over-exploitation due to the live animal trade. The Javanese record ofthis species, from Tanjung Priok by Ouwens (1914) and deRooij (1915), was shown to be based on a misidentifiedspecimen of Chitra chitra by Iskandar (2004b), and thespecies is consequently removed from the fauna of Java.Many of the authors, up to the end of the 20th Century,referred to this species as Pelochelys bibroni (Owen 1853),which was restricted to New Guinea by Webb (1995,2003).Although this species is known from Borneo (e.g., Limand Das 1999), only 3 records exist. One of these is‘‘Koelei’’ (interpreted as Koeling by Iverson, pers. comm.,corresponding with Kuling, 018500S, 1128550E, Kaliman-tan Tengah Province), as cited in Boulenger (1889: 263, asPelochelys cantoris), Bartlett (1894), and de Rooij (1915:332, also cited by Siebenrock 1909, and mapped by Iverson1992). The spelling Koelei is here considered an error forKoetei, a colonial Dutch version of the locality name Kutai(see below). In the distribution of the species, de Rooij(1915: 332) included ‘‘Koti’’ (equivalent to Kutai, 008350S,1178170E, Kalimantan Timur Province) within the Indo-nesian part of Borneo. The former locality is apparentlybased on a skeletonized specimen, BMNH 80.9.25.6,which would have been examined by de Rooij during thepreparation of her monograph on the Indo-Australianreptile fauna. It was collected by the Norwegian explorer,Carl Bock (1849–1932), who did indeed spend time atKutai, then an independent Malay kingdom under Dutchprotection (Reese 1995) and described as ‘‘ . . . a countryenjoying the worst repute among the semi-independentStates’’ (Bock 1881). Bock is not known to have collectedin Kalimantan Tengah (¼Central Kalimantan).Two more recent localities for P. cantorii fromBorneo are in the literature. The first is from SungeiBerau (coordinates at mouth: 018450N, 1178300E), also inKalimantan Timur Province, cited by Iskandar (2000: 90),about 40 km to the north of the Kutai record. The secondlocality is Maruwai (008340S, 114844 0E), KalimantanTengah Province, and is based on a carapace (verified byID) collected by Robert Butler Stuebing, and nowaccessioned with the Museum Zoologicum Bogoriense,Cibinong, Indonesia. This record has been cited byIskandar (2004a).We report here a fourth record of P. cantorii fromBorneo, a specimen from Kampung Marak Parak(068190N, 1168440E; 152 m elevation), Kota MaruduDistrict, at the edge of Gunung Kinabalu National Park,Sabah, East Malaysia (Fig. 1). The specimen was collectedat the junction of Sungei Kinarom and Sungei Serimsim,within a lowland rainforest, on 30 August 2001, andaccessioned with the Sabah Parks Zoological Museum,SP(P)285. The specimen measured 644 mm in curvedcarapace length, 538 mm in curved carapace width, andweighed 23.0 kg in life.This record represents the first published record of P.cantorii for Sabah, and the fourth for Borneo (Fig. 2). A new species of freshwater turtle in the genus Elseya (Testudines: Chelidae) from Central Coastal Queensland, Australia

Stomach contents of Podocnemis unifilis sampled in white water varzéa forest during the dry season in the Mamirauá Sustainable Development Reserve (Middle-Solimões River) had plant material in 100% of cases, with Poaceae and Bombacaceae the most frequently recorded. Poaceae leaves (67.7% frequency) and seeds (21.5% frequency) were common, as were fibers of the fruit Pseudobombax munguba (Bombacaceae; 38.5% frequency), with fruits in general contributing 45.9% of volume. Animal material was consumed in much lesser quantities - only 0.8% of total volume - but had a 37% frequency. © 2006 Chelonian Research Foundation
