. The management of supply chain may provide an opportunity to improve a contractor's performance. The concept of supply chain management has just been recently recognized in the construction industry. As a new concept in Indonesia, the basic structure of the construction supply chain has to be comprehended. In highrise building projects, the construction contract is mainly in the form of general contracting, in which the general contractor (GC) is the main actor in the process of developing a construction supply chain. In the procurement of subcontractors and suppliers, the GC develops the structure of the project supply chain by selecting its partners. This paper discusses the procurement of subcontractors and suppliers conducted by a general contractor, including the standard procedure and the company's policy. The analysis is based on a multiple-case study performed on three large contractors with the focus on high-rise building projects. In this type of projects, the GC usually plays the most siginificant role in the process of developing a supply chain during production process (construction). The approach of managing projects by the main office, and the procurement procedures in the three construction companies vary, these have impact on the formation of supply chain. The variations of these aspects can be seen as the different strategies used by companies to be competitive.
