This study was carried out simultaneously with the Supervised Teaching
Practice in a public school located in Lisbon in a social neighborhood where differences
in values, customs, religions, languages, beliefs, etc. were notorious.
This work is an example of an action-research that results from the
experiences in this context and the curiosity to know the ethnic minorities and how
they are included in the school community of our country, as "the student population,
in a compulsory education of 9 years is less homogeneous and more pluralistic (...)
from the point of view of ethnic, linguistic and nationality "(Souta 1997, p. 37).
As multiculturalism is a very current theme and increasingly present in the
school realities, as future professionals we must realize that our role is very important,
in the way that our attitude and educational practices are able to influence the
formation of our students on positive form as such unfavorable and creating obstacles
to their cognitive, social and emotional development. There for in the face of this
reality some starting questions emerge:
- What are the advantages of a multicultural class?
- What is the teacher's role in a class with children from different cultures?
- Will it require another type of training or some specific training for teachers
who teach classes with these characteristics?
To answer these questions, we used a qualitative methodology using
questionnaires (a data collection tool for a quantitative methodology) and direct and
participant observation.
The final results allowed us to realise the advantages that students have,
both socially and cognitively, when they experience a multicultural group. We also
found that the predisposition of the teacher is a great asset for this subject since the
formations are not required
