O Atlântico Sul é uma importante via de comunicação marítima entre a América do Sul e a África Ocidental, e o meio mais vantajoso para trocas comerciais entre os países desta vasta região. Igualmente relevantes são as suas reservas minerais, de petróleo e gás e o seu potencial pesqueiro. Nesse contexto, importa, ainda, considerar as ameaças nele existentes. O objetivo geral deste estudo é avaliar o papel do Brasil na segurança marítima do Atlântico Sul e encontrar soluções que permitam incrementar a segurança deste espaço marítimo. É utilizada uma estratégia de investigação qualitativa, um estudo de caso e um método de raciocínio indutivo. Na recolha de dados são utilizados preferencialmente os métodos de entrevistas e análise documental. As respostas às questões de investigação realçam a importância do Atlântico Sul, tanto na dimensão política quanto económica, bem como a continuada insegurança marítma na costa ocidental de África, designadamente no Golfo da Guiné. As conclusões apontam para a necessidade de o Brasil, enquanto potência regional, ampliar as ações de cooperação nos domínios da segurança e defesa, com os países parceiros da região, visando o incremento da segurança marítma no Atlântico Sul.The South Atlantic is an important route of maritime communication between South America and Western Africa and is the most advantageous means of trade between the countries of this vast region. Also important are its mineral, oil and gas reserves and its fishing potential. In this context, it is necessary to consider the threats that exist in it. The general objective of this study is to evaluate the role of Brazil in maritime security in the South Atlantic and to find solutions that allow to increase security in this maritime space. A qualitative research strategy, a case study and an inductive reasoning method are used. In the collection of data, the methods of interviews and document analysis are preferably used. Answers to research questions highlight the importance of the South Atlantic, both in the political and economic dimensions, as well as the continued maritime insecurity on the west coast of Africa, namely in the Gulf of Guinea. The conclusions point to the need for Brazil, as a regional power, to increase cooperation actions in the fields of security and defense, with partner countries in the region, aiming at increasing maritime security in the South Atlantic.N/
