PortugalAbstractMost of the cellulose used for industrial purposes is obtainedfrom the products of plants, such as forest trees, cotton etc. It isnow known that certain bacteria produce cellulose from simplesugars, the most important in industrial terms being Acetobacterxylinum, this being the only species that produces sufficientcellulose to be economically viable. A. xylinum is a gram-negative, aerobic bacterium that secretes cellulose fibrils as partof its normal metabolic activity. Cellulose produced by thisorganism is chemically pure, free of lignin and hemicellulose, hasa high polymer crystallinity and a high degree of polymerization,thus distinguishing it from other forms. The most developedcommercial application of microbial cellulose is in acousticdiaphragms for audio speakers, although various medicalapplications also exist.In this study the microbial nutrients status of grape pomace wasevaluated. Extracts of grape pomace, supplemented by variousnitrogen sources were employed as a feedstock for theproduction of microbial cellulose. Results indicate that pomaceextracts can form the basis of culture media for the production ofhigh yields of microbial cellulose.-29 de Novembro a I de Dezembro de 1997' 	 85Tomar
