A importância política, económica e estratégica do Atlântico Sul tem crescido nos últimos anos, principalmente devido à expansão na produção de recursos energéticos decorrentes da descoberta de novas jazidas na América do Sul e em África. A exploração das vulnerabilidades atualmente existentes, principalmente junto à costa Africana, pode ser um fator potenciador de conflito de interesses da parte de diferentes atores globais de relevo.
O presente trabalho tem por finalidade avaliar a necessidade, ou não, do estabelecimento de uma arquitetura securitária no Atlântico Sul, tendo presente as ameaças crescentes nesta região e considerando as diferenças políticas, económicas e sociais presentes nos diversos países situados neste espaço.
Partindo da análise dos principais interesses e ameaças existentes no Atlântico Sul motivadores de cooperação abrangente no domínio securitário, o estudo procurou caracterizar o papel das organizações regionais envolvidas na área, na perspetiva de segurança e defesa, tanto na América do Sul como em África.
Por fim, a investigação conclui que, no atual contexto, não se justifica a criação de uma nova estrutura securitária no Atlântico Sul, por já existirem, neste ambiente estratégico, arquiteturas e acordos firmados com esta finalidade, tornando-se necessária a sua consolidação para eliminar, ou minimizar, as possíveis ameaças. Abstract: The political, economic and strategic importance of the South Atlantic has increased in recent years, mainly due to the expansion in the production of energy resources, as a result of the discovery of new oil and gas fields on both sides of the Atlantic. The exploitation of the existing vulnerabilities currently, especially along the African coast, can be a factor in the conflict of interests of different global players of relevance.
The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the need to establish a security architecture in the South Atlantic, taking into account the growing threats in this region and considering the political, economic and social differences present in the various countries in this region.
Based on the analysis of the main interests and threats in the South Atlantic, motivating comprehensive cooperation in the security field, the study sought to characterize the role of regional organizations involved in the area from a defense and security perspective, both in South America and in Africa.
Finally, the investigation concludes that, nowadays, there is no justification for the creation of a new security structure in the South Atlantic because, in this strategic environment, there are already architectures and agreements signed for this purpose, making it necessary to consolidate them to eliminate or minimize the threats.N/
