Although scientifically unproven, general empirical agreement supports the notion that the early detection of disease is beneficial in the control of the disease process. The aim is to discover and cure conditions which have already produced cellular or biochemical change but which have not so far reached a stage associated with symptoms for which medical aid is sought spontaneously (Wilson and Jungner, 1968).
