Undergraduate Students’ Beliefs, Practices and Values on Sexual Consent:A Scoping ReviewMatthew Numer, Nicole Doria, Jad Sinno, Phillip Joy, Nicole McNichols and Rebecca SpencerSchool of Health and Human Performance, Dalhousie University, Halifax, NS, CanadaIntroduction: Sexual attitudes, values, beliefs, andpractices are important factors that influence sexuallytransmitted infections, abuse and assault prevention,mental and emotional health, and relationship out-comes. The literature regarding undergraduate (UG)university students’ attitudes, opinions, and beliefsregarding sex, gender and sexuality is diverse, encom-passing a wide variety of research topics. Most studies,however, only examine one particular aspect of humansexuality and data within Canada is scarce. The pur-pose of this research is to provide a comprehensiveoverview across multiple topics specifically exploringhuman sexuality issues of UG students in Canada andthe US. This paper focuses on a pilot project, whichinvestigates the topics of sexual orientation and sexualconsent.Methods: A mixed methods approach is used inthis study due to its ability to more thoroughly addresscomplex issues; using quantitative methods to broadlysummarize attitudes and opinions, and qualitativemethods to gain a deeper understanding of the beliefs,values and practices of UG students. The quantitativedata will be collected through validated scales relatedto sexual orientation and sexual consent, and thequalitative data will be collected through open-endeddiscussion questions related to sexual orientation andsexual consent. The study will collect this data fromDalhousie University and the University ofWashington between January and April 2019.Results: The findings of this research will be avail-able in April 2019.Discussion: There is a clear gap in the literatureand our general knowledge base about human sexualbehaviours. Canada, in particular, is one of the fewpost-industrial countries that does not have a large-scale survey of sexual behaviour. We believe that wecan contribute to this gap, and, in doing so, enrichpublic discourse. Due toits complexity and singularity, female orgasm has beenbroken down to more simple variables and studiedunder different perspectives. In result, the interactionsand mechanisms building up to orgasm tend to beunderestimated and are not fully understood nor prop-erly integrated.Method: Aiming to contribute to a more broad andthorough comprehension of female orgasm, we per-formed an argumentative literature review of some vari-ables that have been linked to sexual functioning. Basedon the gathered data and enforcing a multidisciplinaryapproach, we hypothesized possible connections andinfluences among cognitive, psychological and physio-logical variables, as determinants of orgasm in womenResults: The result is a prototypical model for thefemale sexual response, that offers a schematicINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF SEXUAL HEALTH A513representation of the interplay and modulation amongpsychological, physiological and cognitive variables. Itis a circular and open model, that can easily beupdated, and that does not conflict with similar mod-els. Therefore, it is essential to identify the factorsthat influence condom use negotiation self-efficacy invulnerable women. The aim of this paper is to exam-ine whether socio-demographic and marital factors,and HIV prevention knowledge are associated withcondom use negotiation self-efficacy amongMozambican women at sexual risk.Method(s) & Sample: 173 women, patients at aMozambican public Hospital and at risk for HIVinfection, completed measures of sociodemographicand marital characteristics, HIV prevention knowledge,and condom use negotiation self-efficacy. Measuresincluded the Mozambican version of the “Women’sHealth Study Questionnaire”, and its psychometriccharacteristics were evaluated in this sample.Results: The results of the hierarchical regressionanalyses showed that demographic variables (age andeducation) explained 20% of the variance (ΔF(2,170) = 20.92, p<.001) in condom use negotiation self-efficacy, and the marital variables, “marital status” and“talking about AIDS with partner”, explained 30% ofthe variance in the outcome (ΔF(2, 168) = 50.06,p<.001). Women who were younger, had a higher levelof education, were single or not living with partner,and talked more about HIV/AIDS with their partners,had higher levels of condom use negotiation self-effi-cacy. In the final model (with HIV knowledge), educa-tion was no longer a significant predictor, probablydue to its overlap with knowledge. Lower levels ofHIV prevention knowledge were associated with lowerlevels of condom use negotiation self-efficacy. HIVprevention knowledge explained 13% of additionalvariance in the outcome. The final model explained50% of the variance in condom use negotiation self-efficacy.
