Perennial ryegrass is a long-lived, cool season perennial grass species of major importance. It grows well in areas that experience mild winters and cool, moist summers in temperate climates throughout the world. It has many valuable attributes and is considered the best overall pasture grass for many areas. It is the most useful turfgrass in lawns, athletic fields, and golf courses. Gamma-ray mutation breeding techniques were used to generate mutants of perennial ryegrass cultivar ‘Fiesta 4’ to select for decreased mowing, watering, maintenance inputs, and costs. In this study, Gamma-17 mutant line of perennial ryegrass exhibits short- growth in the greenhouse and in the field. The data from the greenhouse and field studies show Gamma-17 has reduced internode length and canopy height. The dry root/shoot biomass ratio of Gamma-17 is also significantly higher than the wild-type in the field and greenhouse. Furthermore, the data from the field study indicate that the survival rate and quality of Gamma-17 are significantly improved, compared to the WT, when both were subjected to a mowing height of 1 inch
