In Arkansas, thereported distribution ofupland habitat in the Ouachita and OzarPhysiographic provinces with scattered records outsidethese provinces in four counties of Crowley’s RidgePhysiographic Province in the far eastern part of thestate (McAllister et al. 2002, 2003, 2013, Shelley andMcAllister 2007). The type locality isLawrence County (Chamberlin 1939). Interestingly,Shelley and McAllister (2007) noted “…thoughArkansas east of the Ouachitas has been poorlyinvestigated, the milliped’s absence from the heavilysampled adjoining corners of Texas, Arkansas, andLouisiana suggests that its absence from Coastal Plainareas to the north may be real.” Therefore, given thatno previous record offrom the Mississippi Alluvial Plain, we herein report anewly discovered population of thisoutside upland habitat in the Delta of far southeasternArkansas.precipitation at an air temperature of 21°C, wecollected 50 xystodesmids matching the description byChamberlin (1939) ofBend Park neighboring the Arkansas River, DeshaCounty (33.987451ºN, 91.362222ºW). These xystodesmids are known to squirthydrogen cyanide from pores lining the sides of theirbody as a chemical defense, so care should be takenwhen collecting.individuals, closer examination revealed the following:most possessed primarily yellow paranota and yellowtransverse bands along the caudal metwith some semilunar splotches (see fig. 3C).
