A common problem in this study is about the background of the novel Larasati Pramoedya Ananta Toer. Subproblems in this study is about the background of the place, setting the time and social background. This study was aimed to obtain a description of the background of the novel Larasati Pramoedya Ananta Toer. The research was conducted by using descriptive, qualitative form. Data collection technique is the technique of documentary studies, and data collection tool is the researcher herself as a key instrument. The source of data in this study is novel Larasati Pramoedya Ananta Toer, and data in this study is novel text , which covers the words, phrases, sentences, which describe the background of the place, setting the time and social background. Analysis of the data was associated with interpreting data based on the background of the novel that consists of background Larasati place, setting the time and social background. The results showed that, the setting place can describe to the reader, about the importance of place setting for the characters formation. The background ; when the night changed to morning,can form the characters to become weak and powerless. On the other hand, social background can shapes character who gives her attention and affection
