Film usage in foreign language teaching - on the example of methodologically processed Russian-speaking material for upper-secondary school

Abstract

The diploma thesis is focused on film usage in foreign language teaching. It presents film as a teaching aid suitable for complete language skills developmen, including the so called fifth language skill - "understanding of the seen and the heard". Strenghts and weaknesses of film in foreign language teaching are described along with tips how to avoid the latter. Practical tips are presented such as how to choose a suitable film, how to present it and process it methodologically to ensure the most efficient way of language acquisition. A typology of exercises was developed to meet the aim of efficiency including pre-, during- and post-viewing exercises. The practical part of the thesis consists of examples of lesson plans using film clips in teaching Russian language at secondary school
