Fifteen recreational runners between the ages of 18 and 35, who scored less than an eleven on the functional ankle instability questionnaire, volunteered for the study. Ankle dorsiflexion and hallux extension was measured for both extremities and navicular drop was measured on the right foot. Eighteen retroflective markers were placed on the thigh, shank and bare foot of the right extremity. A thigh cluster and tibia cluster were composed of four reflective markers which were attached to a polyform shell. The other markers were placed on the greater trochanter, medial and lateral epicondyle of the femur, medial and lateral malleoli, first and fifth metatarsal, medial and lateral calcaneus, and center calcaneus. A Biodex Treadmill was set up in the capture volume of 10 Vicon motion capture cameras (four MX T40 – S and six MX T20-S) and two Bonita 720c cameras. The software used for recording and analysis was Vicon Nexus 2.8. The subjects were instructed to get up to their normal running speed on the treadmill. This speed was recorded for the second trial. After capture, the foot markers were removed, and the hindfoot athletic tape would either be taken off or put on prior to the second trial. The taping and non-taping trial were counterbalanced in order of which trial was conducted first. The magnitude of eversion was observed at the initial loading phase, peak loading phase, and midstance phase of the running pattern. These values will be averaged and compared between trials with preferable running biomechanics. A Pearson-Correlation and Paired Samples T-test will be used to understand how the hindfoot eversion taping affected eversion of the hindfoot. A correlation will also be utilized to understand how the other variables measured may have affected the subject’s response to the ankle taping. Understanding how altering eversion of the hindfoot relates to running kinematics will be a beneficial contribution to injury prevention and running performance. In addition, hindfoot eversion taping may be a beneficial taping technique in recreational runners with specific ankle mobility, hallux mobility, or navicular drop impairments.
