The growing dif-fusion of new services, like mobile television and multi-media communications, emphasizes the need of advancedtransmission techniques that can fundamentally increase thesystem capacity. In this context, the multicell collaborativetransmission is becoming a major subject of research in thewireless communication community as it has been identifiedas one of the underlying principles for future wirelesscommunication systems. Further, if perfect cooperation isassumed, it allows the entire network to be viewed as a single“super-MIMO” system with distributed antenna array at thebase station.This special issue aims at promoting state-of-the-artresearch contributions from all research areas either directlyinvolved in or contributing to improving the issues relatedto multicell cooperation and MIMO technologies for broad-casting and broadband communications.The first paper “Multiantenna analog network codingfor multihop wireless networks” by R. Annavajjala et al.,proposes a two-phase minimum mean-square-error bidirec-tional amplify and forward (MMSE-BAF) relaying protocolto allow two sources exchange independent messages via arelay node equipped with multiple antennas. The proposedprotocol extends upon the so-called analog network codingschemes in the literature in that it inherently exploitsthe multiple antennas at the relay station to reduce thenoise enhancement typical of an AF protocol and can alsocompensate for link imbalances between the relay and thesources and is agnostic to sources’ modulation and codingschemes.The second paper “Near optimum power control andprecoding under fairness constraints in network MIMOsystems” by G. Fodor et al. considers the problem ofsetting the uplink signal-to-noise-and-interference (SINR)target and allocating transmit powers for mobile stations inmulticell spatial multiplexing wireless systems. The authorsdevelop a numerical technique for real-time optimization ofSINR targets and transmit powers. The paper also studiesthe impact of near optimal precoding in a multicell MIMOenvironment.The third paper “Broadcast network coverage withmulticell cooperation” by H. Li et al. studies the benefitsof multicell cooperation in broadcast TV network froman information theoretical perspective. The paper definesoutage capacity as the figure of merit and evaluates thebroadcast coverage area of multicell system where multiplebase stations collaboratively transmit the broadcast signals.The results show that the coverage of a TV broadcastnetwork can be significantly improved by multicell cooper-ation.The fourth paper “An analytical multimodulus algorithmfor blind demodulation in a time-varying MIMO channelcontext” by S. Daumont and D. Le Guennec addressesthe issue of blind MIMO demodulation of communicationsignals, with time-varying channels and in an interceptioncontext. A new adaptive-blind source separation algorithm,which is based on the implementation of the multimoduluscost function, is proposed.2 International Journal of Digital Multimedia BroadcastingThe fifth paper “A transmit beamforming and nullingapproach with distributed scheduling to improve cell edgethroughput” by W. C. Wong et al. proposes a transmitscheme for WiMAX systems, where multiple base stations(BSs) employ downlink transmit beamforming and nullingfor interference mitigation, with minimal coordinationamongst BSs. This scheme improves system throughputand robustness, by increasing cell edge and overall cellthroughputs by 68% and 19%, respectively, and by deliveringimprovement for mobile speed up to 60 km/hour.The sixth paper “Intercell interference coordinationthrough limited feedback” by L. Liu et al. considers the appli-cations of multicell transmission schemes to the downlinkof future wireless communication networks. A MIMO-basedscheme with limited coordination among neighboring basestations (BSs) is proposed to effectively combat the intercellinterference by taking advantage of the degrees of freedom inthe spatial domain.The seventh paper “Phase-shift cyclic-delay diversity forMIMO OFDM systems” by Y. Nam et al. introduces phase-shift cyclic delay diversity (PS CDD) and space-frequency-block-code PS CDD schemes for MIMO OFDM system. Theproposed PS CDD scheme preserves the diversity advantageof traditional CDD in uncorrelated multiantenna chan-nels and furthermore removes frequency-selective nullingproblem of the traditional CDD in correlated multiantennachannels.The eighth paper “Spatial domain resource sharing foroverlapping cells in indoor environment” by R. Kudo et al.presents the effectiveness of spatial resource sharing amongtwo access points. The authors introduce the primary-secondary AP scenario based on zero forcing (PSZ) andcooperative AP scenario based on zero forcing (CZ), con-firming that spatial resource sharing is very attractive for theoverlapping of cell scenario.The last paper of this special issue “Robust MMSEtransceiver designs for downlink MIMO systems withmulticell cooperation” by J. Li et al. proposes, for jointMMSE transceiver designs, three novel robust approaches:the Robust-GIA (the most general), Robust-FIA (the mostefficient), and the Robust-DCOA (which guarantees theglobal optimality).
