Abstract
The paper treats the opposition between realis and irrealis marking in the Prekmurje Slovene complementizers ka ≠ da, comparing them with a parallel opposition in the languages of the Balkan Sprachbund (Albanian, Bulgarian, modern Greek, Macedonian, Romani, Romanian). Though synchronically parallel, the opposition in Prekmurje Slovene arose as a result of peripheral retention (partially preserved in the Carinthian dialect group) and not as a result of language contact with the Balkan Sprachbund. Thus Prekmurje Slovene (together with the Pannonian dialect group) developed, as in many other of its characteristics, in its own direction, condition by its peripheral position with respect to the the South Slavic branc
