The limit of Huo Sang-How changed the image of detective character in 1940\u27s China-

Abstract

Huo Sang (霍桑), the most famous detective character in modern times China, is a character of Cheng Xiaoqing (程小青)\u27s novels during a period which extends from the 1910\u27s to the 1940’s. In the 1920\u27s Huo Sang was called the Oriental Holms (東方福爾摩斯), and scholars recognized him as a copy of Sherlock Holmes. Huo Sang was the symbol of modern times, he had a western knowledge and he criticized the Chinese society of those times. However the character of Huo Sang in the 1940\u27s was very different from the same character in the 1920\u27s. This paper aims to discuss what this difference is. In the 1940\u27s Cheng Xiaoqing re-wrote his novels of Huo Sang, By comparing the new version with the original version, we can see how Huo Sang of the 1940\u27s became a strong advocate of the reform of the justice system in China
