An Study of Chinese Calligraphy Rubbings Imported into Nagasaki during the Edo Period

Abstract

During Edo period Japan’s self imposed policy of seclusion from the outside world, the only port open for trade was Nagasaki. The only countries allowed to trade with Japan being China and the Netherlands. Among the goods traded were books from China. Many kinds of works were imported, and among these were many works devoted to Chinese calligraphy. At the present, research on these calligraphy works is still scarce. This paper will look at the Chinese method of calligraphy, by looking at the calligraphy works that were introduced into Japan through the trade at Nagasaki.東アジアの歴史と動
