Exports of Taiwan Salt to Primorskaya Oblast’ and Karafuto during the Period of Japanese Rule

Abstract

After the Russo-Japanese War, the Japanese took possession of Karafuto andobtained the fishery rights to Primorskaya Oblast’, one of the world’s important fisheries.Since salt is an ancient and important method for preserving food, prosperous fisheriesconsumed enormous amounts of salt. With the success of transit trade, British andSpanish salt acquired a large share of the market at the time. After 1905, however, theJapanese Government started to promote salt production, which made Taiwanese saltincreasingly important. This paper will reveal the process of the Taiwanese salt exportsto Primorskaya Oblast\u27 and Karafuto during the Japanese period
