Blood Glucose Regulation:Putting the Pieces TogetherBenjamin Zwiener*, Margaret WattsDepartment of Mathematics and Data Analytics, Doane University, Crete, NE 68333margaret.watts@doane.eduThe human body has a complex biological system in place to regulate bloodglucose levels. The liver and the pancreas are the two major organsinvolved keeping a person’s blood glucose in a narrow range. There havebeen many mathematical models that focus on the pancreatic cells involvedin glucose regulation, particularly the β-cells which are responsiblefor secreting the hormone insulin. There have also been models ofinsulin receptor activity and glycogenesis in the liver. Our modelcombines all of these major pieces in glucose regulation into a wholebody model. We will look at the model’s response to a meal andinvestigate the reports that pulsatile insulin is beneficial to glucoseregulation. Antisynchronous oscillations in glucagon and insulin havealso been reported. We investigate if these oscillations provide abenefit to glucose regulation.1
