Les livres des séminaires et collèges britanniques à Paris entre Ancien Régime et Révolution

Abstract

International audienceThe British colleges and seminary established in Paris in the seventeenth century had rich and important libraries. While following the models of library management observed in other Paris collections, they also shared the characteristics of the British institutions to which they belonged, which were gathering places for both Parisians and British immigrants. As this comparative study shows, the different libraries served different functions. After they were dispersed during the French Revolution, their later reunion in a single institution provides yet another, hitherto little-known instance of the process of « library building » that took place during the First Empire.Les collèges et séminaire britanniques installés à Paris au XVIIe siècle y ont constitué des bibliothèques fournies. Tout en partageant les modèles bibliothéconomiques des collections parisiennes, elles participent à la spécificité des établissements britanniques, lieu de rencontre entre la société de la capitale et celle que formaient ces immigrés. La comparaison met en évidence les fonctions différenciées que ces collections remplissent au sein des établissements. Enfin, leur recomposition en une entité unique, après les dispersions révolutionnaires, constitue un aspect méconnu du processus de « fabrique des bibliothèques » engagé sous l'Empire
