The consequences of con-vective heat transfers at the interface between flowingwater and the ground, caused by concentration andchanneling of runoff and groundwater around infra-structures, are poorly known. Electrical resistivity isone of the most effective geophysical methods usedto map and characterize permafrost, as it is sensit-ive to the state (frozen/unfrozen) of the ground, itsice content and subzero temperatures. To study theextent of permafrost degradation caused by the re-directing of water flow, electrical resistivity surveyswere conducted perpendicular to a stream draining asmall watershed, south of the airport of Ilulissat inGreenland. Ilulissat is located on the west coast ofGreenland, north of the 69°parallel in the continuouspermafrost zone. The soil of the study site consistsof marine clay and silt. Permafrost temperature isbetween -1 °C and -3.5 °C. The first 4 meters of per-mafrost is ice-rich and show high resistivity valueswhile the soil below 4 meters depth is estimated to beunfrozen due to a high porewater salinity (Foged andIngeman-Nielsen, 2009). The water flow patterns inthe ice-rich zone are easily observable through lowerresistivity values recorded due to permafrost warmingat these locations. At this site, electrical resistivityprofiles correlated with several permafrost propertiessuch as: soil temperatures at different depths, activelayer thickness, and water content of active layer andpermafrost soils. Water discharge and water temper-ature in the stream were measured daily during thestudy period and implications for heat transfers areobserved.966
