In this study, carried out in the communities of San Pablo Huacanó and Copoya, Chiapas, we sought to understand how men and women of these towns feel about what it means to be Zoque. In their origins the two communities are considered to be Zoque, but over time they have lost sight of their identity due to their distinct histories and geographical locations. The language and ancestors linked to their territory form part of the elements voiced in the representations of people to identify themselves as Zoque. In the interior of the communities, language guides the sense of being Zoque, while the territory plays an important role in the cohesion of the inhabitants.En este trabajo, realizado en las comunidades chiapanecas de S an P ablo Huacanó y Copoya, se buscó conocer el sentir de mujeres y hombres respecto a lo que para ellos significa ser zoque. Se trata de dos comunidades consideradas como zoques por su origen pero alejadas en sus historias y por sus territorios tan distintos. El idioma y los antepasados vinculados al territorio vivido forman parte de los elementos expresados en las representaciones de las personas para identificarse como zoques. En las comunidades, el idioma orienta el sentido del “ser zoque”, mientras que el territorio tiene un importante papel de cohesión entre sus habitantes
