Pengaruh Pemberian Ekstrak Daun Kumis Kucing (Orthosiphon Aristatus) Terhadap Penurunan Kadar Glukosa Darah Tikus Wistar Yang Diinduksi Aloksan

Abstract

Background Diabetes mellitus prevalence is ever increasing year to year, that an effective and efficient drug is needed to overcome this metabolic syndrome. This research uses Orthosiphon aristatus be an effective and economic traditional alternative as it contains flavonoid and saponin that are capable of lowering glucose level.Purpose To analyze the effects of Orthisiphon aristatus extract administration on the glucose level reduction in aloksan – induced male wistar rat.Method It is an experimental research using the pre and post test randomized controlled group design. Experimental animals are 25 male wistar rat divided into 5 treatment groups; pure water (negative control), metformin dose of 18 mg/mouse (positive control), and three groups given 0.25, 0.75, 1.25 g/kg of bodyweight Orthosiphon aristatus extract respectively. Each group has been induced with aloksan to a glucose level of approximately 126 mg/dL, and then their post aloksan glucose level is measured as pre test data. Treatments are administered for 28 days, and during day 14 and 28 their fasting glucose levels are measured as post test 1 and post test 2 data.Results All treatment groups indicate significant values at pre test, post test 1, and post test 2, with p < 0.05. Dose 0,75 and 1,25 g/kg og bodyweight show better reduction compared to using pure water, but only dose 1,25 g/kg of bodyweight shows equivalent reduction to using metformin in first 14 days and generally in 28 days.Conclusion Orthosiphon aristatus extract has the ability to lower glucose level better than pure water, but only the dose of 1.25 g/kg of bodyweight is as effective as metformin if admistered for 28 days.Keywords Extract, Orthosiphon aristatus, glucose level, aloksa
