In our museum, we use File-Maker Pro 9 as the database software and set up the database to enable people to access it, input data into it, and search it from any computer on the campus.In our museum, there is a diction-ary file in which fish name (Japanese name and Latin name) and species name (standard Japanese name and scientific name) are linked. If the standard Japa-nese name of a species is input, the Japa-nese and Latin names of the family and the scientific name of the species will automatically be generated. For auto-mated input system, the correct standard Japanese name should be input, and not the scientific name, which is mistakable. The  se t t ings  can completely prevent input error. We use pop-up menus for selecting sampling site (Pacific Ocean, Sea of Japan, etc.), habitat environment (saltwater,  fresh-water, brackish wa-ter, etc.), sampling method (use of fill net, set net, angling, etc.), and the option of “with or without picture.” This selec-tion system saves the trouble of inputting information.In order to manage the data safely for a long period, we print thousands of cop-ies of the input data and bind them for storage.Screen shot of list-style display.
