Pp. 1353.The second edition of this very helpful volume is justified by the in-clusion of some four hundred more pages of material, exclusive of the in-dex. Moreover, the author has been able to bring the citations down todate and to keep step with the legislature in the inclusion of new statutorymaterial.The volume should be characterized before further discussion, par-ticularly so since the author refers to it as "Trial Briefs." It is rather adigest of Illinois decisions appropriately and alphabetically arranged forconvenience, and the headings are those which the practicing attorneymore or less habitually uses without the necessity of searching the mindfor the proper caption. The topic arrangement might be described as or-ganized according to "common sense" and entirely practical. The em-phasis is upon fact rather than theory. Its compilation grew out of thepersonal notes of the author after wide and considerable experience as atrial attorney. Inasmuch as the book confines itself to Illinois citations, itis limited in appeal, and further limited in that the decisions affect acci-dents only, or, as the author states, "closely related topics." Neverthe-less, it is a most useful manual for the field it purports to cover and, beinglimited in topic, derives the advantage of brevity. Lawyers interested inpersonal injury litigation, property damage, insurance, and workmen'scompensation will find ready references to the cases, while lawyers tryingcases in many other fields will find a valuable compendium of trial prob-lems answered by citations to such headings as Evidence, Instructions,Witnesses, Jury, and general Practice Topics. Special attention to thesesubjects by no means exhausts the usefulness of the volume in many otherfields, but as a ready reference and starting point for a search of thelaw in the special field it has no equal for Illinois trial attorneys.

These questions are not discussed. The already mentioned con-stitutional problems of residential segregation are dismissed with state-ments to the effect that state action cannot impose residential segrega-tion although such imposition through private covenants is legal(pp. 145, 147). Again, there is no mention of the -problem of waiverwhich creates the one serious issue in the whole group of recent casesin which school teachers or other public employees challenge racialdiscrimination in the fixing of salaries. Such matters could profitablyhave been analyzed in space which the author devotes to extended com-ment upon unimportant cases. Thus, an interesting but relatively trivialcontroversy over the custody of white children 'by their colored step-father so intrigues the author that he devotes two pages fo its dis-cussion.In brief, the reviewer regrets that the author did not undertakea more ambitious task than the cyclopaedic -presentation to which herestricted himself. At the same time the debt of the profession, andthe interested layman as well, to the author for his careful and thoroughcompilation is substantial.In its physical aspects this book maintains the high standards whichreaders have come to associate with the imprint of the University of theNorth Carolina Press.WILLIAm H. While the fun-damental principles of family law have changed but little in recentyears, the emphasis on the various divisions thereof has altered. Theco-authors, cognizant of this fact, have given due recognition thereto bydecreasing the materials devoted to the older topics and expanding thosesections devoted to the matter of enforcing alimony decrees, and theproblems created by marriage evasion acts and the migratory divorce.Landmark cases have not been discarded, but much of the material isrefreshingly recent in origin.
