DURHAM, N.H. -- The University of New Hampshire Alumni Association hosted an annual
awards luncheon recently honoring seven alumni for their outstanding contributions to the
university and for other notable accomplishments in their careers and in their communities.
Profile of Service Award
The Profile of Service Award is presented for outstanding performance on behalf of the Alumni
Association or the university. This year there were two recipients:
William Pizzano, ’49, of Topsfield, Mass., served for 16 years as director of alumni activities at
UNH. He was also president of the 100 Club and was on the Hall of Fame committee for five
years. When the Wildcat Athletic Council was formed in 2001, Pizzano, once a quarterback on
the Wildcat wartime football team, was its first director. In 2003, he was awarded the Robert
“Bo” Dickinson Football Spirit Award by the UNH Athletics and the Alumni Meritorious Services
Award from the UNH Alumni Association. In 2003, Pizzano, who began his military career as a
cadet in the UNH Army ROTC and then served as an officer in the naval reserves for 37 years,
was inducted into the ROTC Hall of Fame, and in 2004, was inducted into the Wildcat Athletics
Council Hall of Fame.

John Power, ’59, of Westerly R.I., received a bachelor’s in economics in 1959. After receiving
an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, Power began a career as a
financial analyst, leading to the position of senior vice president of the Hartford Insurance
Group. When he became a founding director of the UNH Foundation, Power served as chair of
the investment and finance committee from 1989 until 1999. He brought years of experience
as a financial analyst, designing and executing investment and financial strategies that
allowed the foundation endowment to grow from just under $1 million to more than $55
million in a 10-year period. Even after stepping down as a full member of the board, he
accepted a new assignment and remains a special financial advisor to the foundation.

Alumni Meritorious Service Award
Established in 1934, the Alumni Meritorious Service Award is presented for devotion and
loyalty in maintaining alumni or other UNH organizations, participating in alumni or university
affairs, or helping to expand the influence and prestige of the university. There were three
recipients of this year’s award:
Barbara Smart Lucy, ’50, who passed away last summer, was a long-time resident of the Saco

Valley area of North Conway, where she lived with her husband on the family farm. They
raised four children, teaching them a love for community and service, which Lucy
demonstrated throughout her life. In the early 1960s, she became the leading force in the
effort to stop a plan to create a recreational lake in the Saco River Valley by building a dam
and flooding the valley. Lucy was known as the woman who defeated the dam. Lucy was
instrumental in organizing the Mt. Washington Valley Alumni Club, spending countless hours
helping with reunions and other projects. She served as class secretary for decades, reporting
on the news of her classmates, keeping people in touch with each other, helping to promote
the sense of caring and community that defined so much of what she did throughout her life.

William Savage, ’57, of Yarmouth, ME, has been an integral part of every Class of 1957
reunion planning effort, recruiting classmates for volunteer work, soliciting donations, and
serving on committees. He has spent countless hours contacting hundreds of classmates.
When he gets in touch, not only does he tell them about upcoming reunion activities, but his
enthusiastic encounters have helped to reconnect classmates who have been out of touch with
UNH for years. His efforts around the 50th reunion are particularly remarkable: he single-
handedly contacted 200 classmates. Savage’s heart-felt commitment to outreach and
community building has been a beacon for many throughout the years.

Dorothy Stella, ’47, of Framingham, Mass., has devoted herself especially to fundraising
efforts and to alumni events. She has been involved in numerous class reunion planning
efforts and was a major organizing force in the class of 1947’s landmark 50th reunion. Stella
has been proud, each year when she visits, to observe the growth and progress at UNH. The
renovated Dimond Library and her class contributions to making this undertaking possible are
especially meaningful to her. Stella also served with great dedication as her class secretary for
two decades. Stella’s commitment to service extends into her community as well, where she
has been a devoted volunteer in her local hospital, her church and other charities. Whatever
she takes on, Dorothy Stella has been a wonderful representative of UNH and a model of a life
of service.

Award of Excellence for Outstanding Achievement
Established in 2005, the Award of Excellence for Outstanding Achievement honors a UNH
graduate for significant accomplishments in business or professional life or for public service
to their community, state, or nation.
Maj. Gen. Roland Lajoie, ’58, of West Wilton, graduated with a bachelor’s in political science
and went on to a distinguished military career. In 1998 he was appointed by President Clinton
to serve as chairman of the U.S.-Russia joint commission on P.O.W.-M.I.A’s, leading the effort
to investigate outstanding cases of unaccounted military personnel since World War II. Lajoie
served as the deputy assistant to the Secretary of Defense, responsible for implementing
policy to assist the former Soviet Union reduce and eliminate its weapons of mass destruction.
During his 35-year military career, Lajoie held a wide variety of national security positions,
culminating in his last assignment as the associate deputy director for operations/military
affairs for the CIA. Lajoie’s work his been recognized with numerous awards through the
years, including the Distinguished Service Medal, Bronze Star, and Legion of Merit.

Young Alumnus/Alumna Achievement Award
The Young Alumnus/Alumna Achievement Award recognizes a graduate under 40 years old
who is an active volunteer with UNH alumni affairs and has demonstrated leadership and
promise.
This year’s recipient, Michael Rollo, ’06, of Rollinsford, has served both his community and
state. In 1996, while a student at Keene State College, he was elected to the New Hampshire
House of Representatives. He was 22. Six years later, he enrolled at UNH as a nontraditional
student—and won another term in the legislature, where he served on the legislative
administration committee and as a minority floor whip. As soon as he graduated in 2006 with
a degree in history, Rollo became a member of the UNH Alumni Association. Today Rollo
continues to serve in the legislature sponsoring legislation that supports dairy farmers and co-
sponsoring legislation that would generate revenue as well as enthusiasm for the university
system by establishing license plates featuring the mascots of UNH, Keene and Plymouth.

awards luncheon recently honoring seven alumni for their outstanding contributions to the
university and for other notable accomplishments in their careers and in their communities.
Profile of Service Award
The Profile of Service Award is presented for outstanding performance on behalf of the Alumni
Association or the university. This year there were two recipients:
William Pizzano, ’49, of Topsfield, Mass., served for 16 years as director of alumni activities at

This year there were two recipients:William Pizzano, ’49, of Topsfield, Mass., served for 16 years as director of alumni activities atUNH. He was also president of the 100 Club and was on the Hall of Fame committee for fiveyears. When the Wildcat Athletic Council was formed in 2001, Pizzano, once a quarterback onthe Wildcat wartime football team, was its first director. In 2003, he was awarded the Robert“Bo” Dickinson Football Spirit Award by the UNH Athletics and the Alumni Meritorious ServicesAward from the UNH Alumni Association. In 2003, Pizzano, who began his military career as acadet in the UNH Army ROTC and then served as an officer in the naval reserves for 37 years,was inducted into the ROTC Hall of Fame, and in 2004, was inducted into the Wildcat AthleticsCouncil Hall of Fame.PHOTO: http://unhinfo.unh.edu/news/img/alumni/pizzano.jpgJohn Power, ’59, of Westerly R.I., received a bachelor’s in economics in 1959. After receivingan MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, Power began a career as afinancial analyst, leading to the position of senior vice president of the Hartford InsuranceGroup. When he became a founding director of the UNH Foundation, Power served as chair ofthe investment and finance committee from 1989 until 1999. He brought years of experienceas a financial analyst, designing and executing investment and financial strategies thatallowed the foundation endowment to grow from just under $1 million to more than $55million in a 10-year period. Even after stepping down as a full member of the board, heaccepted a new assignment and remains a special financial advisor to the foundation.PHOTO: http://unhinfo.unh.edu/news/img/alumni/power.jpgAlumni Meritorious Service AwardEstablished in 1934, the Alumni Meritorious Service Award is presented for devotion andloyalty in maintaining alumni or other UNH organizations, participating in alumni or universityaffairs, or helping to expand the influence and prestige of the university. There were threerecipients of this year’s award:Barbara Smart Lucy, ’50, who passed away last summer, was a long-time resident of the SacoUNH Alumni Association Honors Seven For Outstanding Contributions To The Universityhttp://www.unh.edu/delete/news/cj_nr/2007/jun/kc21alumni.cfm.html[5/1/2017 3:39:36 PM]Valley area of North Conway, where she lived with her husband on the family farm. Theyraised four children, teaching them a love for community and service, which Lucydemonstrated throughout her life. In the early 1960s, she became the leading force in theeffort to stop a plan to create a recreational lake in the Saco River Valley by building a damand flooding the valley. Lucy was known as the woman who defeated the dam. Lucy wasinstrumental in organizing the Mt. Washington Valley Alumni Club, spending countless hourshelping with reunions and other projects. She served as class secretary for decades, reportingon the news of her classmates, keeping people in touch with each other, helping to promotethe sense of caring and community that defined so much of what she did throughout her life.PHOTO: http://unhinfo.unh.edu/news/img/alumni/lucy.jpgWilliam Savage, ’57, of Yarmouth, ME, has been an integral part of every Class of 1957reunion planning effort, recruiting classmates for volunteer work, soliciting donations, andserving on committees. He has spent countless hours contacting hundreds of classmates.When he gets in touch, not only does he tell them about upcoming reunion activities, but hisenthusiastic encounters have helped to reconnect classmates who have been out of touch withUNH for years. His efforts around the 50th reunion are particularly remarkable: he single-handedly contacted 200 classmates. Savage’s heart-felt commitment to outreach andcommunity building has been a beacon for many throughout the years.PHOTO: http://unhinfo.unh.edu/news/img/alumni/savage.jpgDorothy Stella, ’47, of Framingham, Mass., has devoted herself especially to fundraisingefforts and to alumni events. She has been involved in numerous class reunion planningefforts and was a major organizing force in the class of 1947’s landmark 50th reunion. Stellahas been proud, each year when she visits, to observe the growth and progress at UNH. Therenovated Dimond Library and her class contributions to making this undertaking possible areespecially meaningful to her. Stella also served with great dedication as her class secretary fortwo decades. Stella’s commitment to service extends into her community as well, where shehas been a devoted volunteer in her local hospital, her church and other charities. Whatevershe takes on, Dorothy Stella has been a wonderful representative of UNH and a model of a lifeof service.PHOTO: http://unhinfo.unh.edu/news/img/alumni/stella.jpgAward of Excellence for Outstanding AchievementEstablished in 2005, the Award of Excellence for Outstanding Achievement honors a UNHgraduate for significant accomplishments in business or professional life or for public serviceto their community, state, or nation.Maj. Gen. Roland Lajoie, ’58, of West Wilton, graduated with a bachelor’s in political scienceand went on to a distinguished military career. In 1998 he was appointed by President Clintonto serve as chairman of the U.S.-Russia joint commission on P.O.W.-M.I.A’s, leading the effortto investigate outstanding cases of unaccounted military personnel since World War II. Lajoieserved as the deputy assistant to the Secretary of Defense, responsible for implementingpolicy to assist the former Soviet Union reduce and eliminate its weapons of mass destruction.During his 35-year military career, Lajoie held a wide variety of national security positions,culminating in his last assignment as the associate deputy director for operations/militaryaffairs for the CIA. In 1996, while a student at Keene State College, he was elected to the New HampshireHouse of Representatives. He was 22. Six years later, he enrolled at UNH as a nontraditionalstudent—and won another term in the legislature, where he served on the legislativeadministration committee and as a minority floor whip. As soon as he graduated in 2006 witha degree in history, Rollo became a member of the UNH Alumni Association. Today Rollocontinues to serve in the legislature sponsoring legislation that supports dairy farmers and co-sponsoring legislation that would generate revenue as well as enthusiasm for the universitysystem by establishing license plates featuring the mascots of UNH, Keene and Plymouth.PHOTO: http://unhinfo.unh.edu/news/img/alumni/rollo.jpg
