The genusis also known from China and Japan.INTRODUCTIONThe eyeless, soil dwelling insects of the family Japygidae in the orderDiplura have received scant attention from North American en-tomologists. Only the California fauna has been studied in detail ina series of papers by Smith from 1959 through 1964. Inone of thesepapers, Smith (1959) discussed the genus Occasjapyx. Smith character-ized the genus as follows: (1) antennae 24 segmented, (2) first laminaoflacina falciform, (3) tergite VIIwithposterolateral angles directedposteriorly, (4) forceps asymetrical with twoprominent teeth, (5) bodywithout plumose body setae. These characters also serve to place thegenus in the subfamily Japyginae.Occasjapyx presently includes four California species, O. americanus(MacGillivary), O. californicus Silvestri, O. koboidi (Silvestri), and O.sierrensis Smith, five species from Japan, and four species from China(Reddell, 1983). This paper describes Occasjapyx carltoni new speciesfrom the Ozark Mountains of the Interior Highlands. Gonopore: a narrow longitudinal slit; ananterior or posterior flap not evident; anterior margin with about 34long setae in 2 (possibly 3) rows; posterior margin with about 37-40small setae arranged in2-3 rows, posterior to which are 14-16 longersetae arranged in 2rows. Papillae: one each side, broadly rounded apically,with 40 + longer setae irregularly arranged, Fig. 18.FORCEPS. Left cercus: 1 premedian and one post median tooth;predental tubercles 4, interdental tubercles 7, postdental tubercles 10.Right cercus: one premedian and one post median tooth; predentaltubercles 5, interdental tubercles 3-4, postdental tubercles 14, Fig. 19.DISCUSSIONThe discovery of the genus Occasjapyx in the Interior Highlandspresents an interesting distributional disjunction between the centraland western United States. The majority of the Interior Highlandendemic taxa have their closest affinities withtaxa east of the MississippiRiver. Smith (1960) also described a japygid, Eojapyx pedis Smith, fromMissouri whose closest relatives inthe subfamily Provalljapyginae arefound only along the west coast of North America.
