Urbanity within and outside neighborhoodmaking public space, producing the contemporary individual

Abstract

International audienceThe contribution aims to highlight the phenomenon of urbanity within and outside traditional neighborhood for instance the Medina of Rabat. The main issue of the study is to analyze the relationship between the transformation made by the urban project and social practices; and to point shifts of meaning, of urbanity values and practices between the two major entities of the urban centrality: the Medina and new urban spaces. Our investigations fields are the public areas of Bab Lamrissa in Salé and dock of Rabat. These two areas with different urban backgrounds underwent extensive restructuring in the context of the Project for the development of the Bouregreg valley. However, this contribution will focus only on the case of the dock Rabat which is located between an area with low density materialized by a Marina of Salé (a real estate project of high standing on the right bank of the Bouregreg:); and the medina of Rabat, as a high density area. In such contingencies, the question of living together and urbanity is therefore acute. This research focused on understanding and explaining the mechanisms of use, appropriation and perception of public spaces. We conducted both observations and interviews in order to study the phenomena of urbanity in this “new” public space
