Understanding the visual identities of music albums amongst the pupils in the 9th grade

Abstract

An important part of the identity of popular music is the way different artists and their music is represented visually – covers of the records, the image in the web player, posters, etc. This is a visual identity by which they recognize and separate them at first sight. Visual identity of music albums which consists of graphic symbols (logos and logos) is especially important as a key element of the visual identity and design, and the creation of the album. On the basis of this, the following research questions, which I want to explore, are raised: How is the visual identity of performers connected or different in a particular musical genre and between different genres? How or whether the visual identity of the album expresses what the music communicates to him? What impacts do visual-linguistic parameters such as color, shape, composition and motives have? How do adolescents understand experience and value the relationship between the genre of popular music and its visual identity? In the theoretical part, I answered those questions through the study of literature and the analysis of other sources (documentaries on musical development and a variety of electronic sources), and the formal analysis of visual identities of albums of various performers from different genres. On this basis, I developed fine-language parameters for the identification of those characteristics. Due to the fact that I am a musician and create my own original music as well as visual images of it, I included in the analysis of my copyrighted music and graphic designs. In the empirical part, I will explore how the 9th grade students understand the relationship between a genre of popular music and its visual identity. A few days before I will give them a questionnaire, which will determine, how many of them are familiar with the visual image of music albums and their graphic signs and what I can expect on the basis of that. When we start with the artistic task, students will listen to the music genre and develop visual identity for it or for its performer. I will work with two classes, where they will be separated into two groups. Eventually, I will have 4 groups, which will each listen to different music genres. They will work individually. When listening to certain music, which I am going to prepare, they will develop a visual image. The focus will be more on the visual image of the album as a graphic sign. Based on surveys, discussions with students during labor and the analysis of their products, I will subsequently identify how and in what way students understand, experience and critically evaluate the relationship between the musical genre and its visual identity
