This Forum presentation provides an overview on current trends in genetic testing and explores ways in which genetic testing is regulated and reimbursed in the U.S. The presentation also includes and explanation of how genetic tests are assessed in terms of evidence, including challenges and pitfalls. An understanding of how the implications of genetic testing on population help is discussed.
Vivian Coates, MBA, is Vice President of Information Services and Health Technology Assessment at ECRI Institute where developed and leads ECRI Institute’s evidence-based medicine and health technology assessment program, including the Evidence-based Practice Center (EPC) and the Health Technology Assessment Information Service (HTAIS) for health plans, hospitals/health systems and health policymakers. She initiates and fosters relationships with users of comparative effectiveness and health technology assessment information to promote evidence-based approaches for clinical practice guideline development, healthcare coverage, purchasing, delivery, and policy making.
Ms. Coates’ most recent initiative is the development of ECRI’s personalized medicine resource on genetic/genomic testing, ECRIgene. This interactive database includes critical information on hundreds of genetic, genomic and proteomic tests meeting ECRI’s criteria for inclusion.
