Agricultural research, impact on swine

Abstract

Swine research-from crossbreeding to the farrowing crate to the back fat probe-has left its mark on both the hog itself and the entire swine industry. Feed efficiency, for example, has improved about 25 percent during the past 20 years. The pork producer of the early 1950\u27s fed his animals about 400 to 420 pounds of feed to produce 100 pounds of live animal. Today, he can produce 100 pounds live weight gain with only 300 pounds of feed: a 3-to-1 feed efficiency ratio!https://lib.dr.iastate.edu/specialreports/1068/thumbnail.jp
